Boko Haram: Amnesty international reacts to Borno multiple suicide
attack
Amnesty
International has condemned the suicide bomb attack at Mandareri-Sambisa ward of
Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.
Osai Ojigho,
Director Amnesty International Nigeria in a statement described the attack as a
type of Boko Haram’s disdain on the sanctity of life and campaign targeting
civilians.
The statement read:
“These horrific suicide bomb attacks that killed at least 30 people and injured
over 40 more bear all the hallmarks of Boko Haram and its vicious, unrelenting
campaign targeting civilians.
“These unlawful
attacks are typical of Boko Haram’s despicable disdain for the sanctity of
human life. We are calling on Boko Haram and other armed groups to immediately
stop targeting civilians.
“All those
responsible must face justice for all the atrocities it has committed,
including the use of children for suicide missions.
“The Nigerian
authorities must do more to protect civilians, especially in areas like Konduga
that have frequently been targeted by Boko Haram.”
Meanwhile, Borno
State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) while confirming the attack on Monday,
said
30 persons lost their lives, while 42 others were injured when three
suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers detonated Improvised Explosive Device
(IED) in Mandarari community of Konduga local government area.
Usman Kachala,
SEMA’s Director of Search, Rescue and Operations, who disclosed this to newsmen
when he visited the scene of the attack on Monday, said the incident occurred
around 8pm on Sunday.
Kachala said that
the three suicide bombers, comprising two females and a male, detonated the
IEDs in a local tea joint and film centre in the community.

The Borno State
Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) on Monday said 30 persons lost their lives
while 42 others were injured when three suspected Boko Haram suicide
bombers detonated Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Mandarari community of
Konduga local government area.
He said that about
17 persons died instantly, adding that the death toll increased to 30 on Monday
as a result of lack of immediate medical attention.
The SEMA Director
said that his staff could not reach the spot of the incident as the military
had closed the road to traffic and the hospital in Konduga did not have enough
facilities to handle the situation.
“When I and my team
arrived Konduga early this morning, the military prevented us from gaining
access to the community to assist the victims.
“They told us they
were given order from above not to open the road until 9am,” he lamented.
NAN reporter, who
later visited the scene of the attacks along with SEMA team, reports that
dozens of the wounded victims were seen being conveyed in pick-up vans by
relations to hospitals in Maiduguri, the state capital, a distance of about 80
km from their town.
Boko Haram: What Air Force did to insurgents on Monday
The Nigeria Air
Force (NAF) says its Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has degraded
another Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) hideout in the Sambisa Forest in Borno
State.
Air Commodore
Ibikunle Daramola, NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, who
disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja, said the operation was
conducted on Sunday.
”The operation was
executed on June 16, after persistent Intelligence, Surveillance and
Reconnaissance (ISR) missions reveal heavy presence of BHTs at a new camp with
several structures hidden under the thick foliage of the Forest.
”Accordingly, the
ATF dispatched an Alpha Jet to attack the location.
”Its bombs hit the
target area, with devastating effects on several of the camouflaged structures,
neutralising their BHT occupants,” he said.
Daramola added that
the NAF, operating in concert with surface forces, would sustain efforts to
completely degrade the terrorists in the Northeast.
Zamfara: Buhari reacts to latest killings, issues fresh order
President Muhammadu
Buhari has directed state governments across the Northwest to pursue an urgent
revamp of the national security apparatus in the subregion.
A statement issued
in Abuja on Sunday by Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and
Publicity, said the partnership followed the infiltration of bandits into areas
that were hitherto secure.
”This is coming on
the heels of the recent killing of 34 persons in an attack on Tungar Kafau and
Gidan Wawa communities in Shinkafi Local Government Areas of Zamfara,” the
presidential aide said.
Shehu quoted
President Buhari as expressing sorrow over the renewed attacks and extended his
sympathies to the governments and people of Sokoto and Zamfara states.
The president
charged all stakeholders, including the federal security agencies and the
states involved in drawing up the long-term strategic defence plan to begin its
immediate implementation.
”Under the plan,
states are joining the federal government in supporting the security and
military operations by providing logistical support.
”States are
providing additional vehicles in addition to those provided from the center.
”The federal
government is establishing new forward operation bases and when all of these
come together, the ongoing operations will be scaled up,” the presidential aide
added.
According to him,
the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the various State Emergency
Management Agencies (SEMA) are expected to streamline their operations to
provide succor to displaced persons.
He noted that
thousands of the displaced persons were taking refuge in the neighboring Niger
Republic.
Shehu expressed the
hope that the full implementation of the plan would provide security for
residents to return to their deserted communities.
He reiterated the
determination of the Buhari administration to safeguard lives and property of
all citizens, assuring that the government ”will not fail in that regard”.
At least, 14 people
have been reported dead and 38 others seriously injured following a suicide
bomb attack at Mandareri-Sambisa ward of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno
State.
According tosome residents of
the area, who spoke to newsmen on Sunday
night, said the suicide bombers were two in number, who attacked the community
few minutes after eight O’clock.
According to the
residents, the area attacked by the two suicide bombers is a crowded area where
young men usually gather to while away time during the evening.
A political women
leader in the area, who identified herself as Hajiya Fatima, said she was at
the hospital in Konduga at the time of calling, adding that “people are just
dying.”
From the background
there was so much noise and confusion as people seemed to be calling for
helping hands to carry those injured.
Hajiya Fatima said,
“the situation is very bad as there are not many hands in the hospital to help
the injured.
” We are hoping
that the wounded would hold still before morning when help is hopefully going
to come. Already Police and some soldiers have arrived the area,” she said.
For now there was
no official details from either police or the military, but residents have said
situation is bad as at the time of this report.
Kajuru crisis: Christians, Muslims celebrate Eid-el-Fitr together
despite killings
Despite incessant
killings that led to the loss of lives and property in Adara chiefdom in Kajuru
local government area of Kaduna state, Christians and Muslims in the area
celebrated Eid-el-fitr together in the spirit of love, forgiveness and
reconciliation.
The Adara people
have of recent witnessed incessant killings by unknown gunmen resulting to the
loss of lives and destruction of properties of unimaginable magnitude.
Speaking on the
occasion, Chairman, Peace and Reconciliation Committee in the area, Mr. Patrick
Maigari said the coming together of both Christians and Muslims in the area was
to strengthen their bonds of love and unity that unite them since time immemorial.
Mr. Patrick
Maigari, a former House of Assembly member, Chairman of Kajuru local government
area and former commissioner of health in the state said, “The event is part of
activities to ensure peace and mutual understanding amongst ourselves and forge
ahead as a people irrespective of any difference.”
Maigari
congratulated the Muslims on the Eid-el-Fitr celebration and appealed to all
ethnic and religious groups to support the committee in the actualization of
peace and unity that eluded the people some times.
Muslims and
Christians have held special Sallah celebrations to strengthen bonds and
relationships in crisis-prone Kajuru local government area of Kaduna state.
He urged the people
to submit all perceived wrongfull acts and complaints to the committee,
stressing that it was the only way there would be better understanding with a
view to attending to complaints.
Also speaking, a
Social Democratic Party, SDP, governorship candidate in the 2019 election,
Alhaji Haruna Saeed Kajuru, expressed sadness over crisis in the area,
stressing that it has tarnished the image of the area.
He advised the
Peace and Reconciliation Committee to maintain the tempo and look for ways that
would immediately resolve the lingering problems and bring lasting peace to the
Kajuru people.
In his remarks, the
Emir of Kajuru, Alhaji Alhassan Adamu, commended organizers of the event and
asked the people to return to their farms without fear of anything but enjoined
the people to work together as a family and report any suspicious movement to
the constituted authority.
Representatives of
Jamatu Nasiru Islam, Christian Association of Nigeria, Hausa and Fulani and the
Adara Community Development Associations commended the state authority for the
release of elders detained as a result of the crisis.
''I am fulfilled I killed him'' Man says after killing his neighbor who
was making advances at his wife
21-year-old man,
Umar Audu, has been arrested by men of the Niger state police command for
allegedly killing one Abubakar Mohammadu of the Fulani Camp, Wawa village in
New-Bussa, Borgu Local Government Area of the state, for making advances
at his wife, Hassan Audu.
According to police
sources, trouble started when Audu's wife, Hassan, complained to him that
Mohammed who is a neighbor and resides in their compound, was asking her to
have sex with him despite the fact that he knows she is married. Audu
confronted Mohammed and warned him several times to leave his wife alone.
Things came to a
halt recently when Audu attacked Mohammed with a matchete, inflicting deep
cuts on his head which led to his death.
When interrogated,
Audu says he doesn't regret killing Mohammed.
“I don’t regret
killing him because Mohammadu decided to die like a chicken. In his next life,
he will not make advances to married women. I am ready to bear the
consequences. Let the law take its course. I am fulfilled that Mohammadu will
never see my wife again, Allah will judge him.” Audu said
Audu is currently
in police custody and will be charged to court soon.
Past leaders laid foundation for Islamisation of Nigeria – CAN backs
Obasanjo
The Christian
Association of Nigeria (CAN) has commended former President Olusegun Obasanjo
for coming out to speak against the alleged planned Fulanization/Islamization
of the country.
CAN also urged the
Federal Government to take the alarm raised by the former President seriously
and act accordingly.
The Christian body
stated this through its National Director, Legal and Public Affairs, Evangelist
Kwamkur Samuel Vondip, on the forthcoming CAN presidential elections and the
state of the nation, in Jos, the Plateau State Capital.
Vondip said, “Level
of insecurity of the nation; the increase and expansion of the activities of
insurgencies, armed bandits, armed robbery, kidnappers, killer Fulani herdsmen
seem to have continued unabated.
“We expect the
government to be bold enough to take responsibility and be sincere in providing
convincing lasting solutions.
“The situation
whereby the government would be denying the increasing rate of insecurity while
the security budget keeps swelling up with increase in casualties amongst the
security operatives, increase in number of victims and cry by communities is
worrisome and calls for serious reflections.
He added that, “We
advocate further for the creation of state police as the major solutions to
ending this communities’ invasions by so called unknown gunmen.
“The inability of
the Federal Government to ensure the release of Leah Sharibu and other abducted
victims of Boko Haram gives us sleeplessness.
“One of the
cardinal promises of President Buhari administration is the end to the reign of
terrorism and ensuring the release of captured victims of insurgents but the
first tenure ended up without achieving maximally such result. We pray and hope
that President Buhari will do everything within his ability to achieve this
goal if he is to be taken more seriously.
Speaking on the
alleged planned Fulanization or Islamization of the country, Vondip said, “CAN
believes that the foundation for Islamisation of Nigeria has since been laid by
the makers of the Nigeria Constitution and some previous leaders of Nigeria.
“Particular
examples are the provisions made in the Constitution for the operation of
Sharia laws and courts. This makes the common law and the Sharia law to be
operating in the same constitution. This naturally has divided the nation into
two and sets the tone for Islamization. The implication of this scenario is
confusion,” he maintained.
“Furthermore, as we
have said before, the registration of Nigeria, (a secular state) as a member of
Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) by military fiat is a further
confirmation of deliberate Islamization of the country. This calls for review
if our leaders are sincere with their claim that nobody is Islamizing the
country.”
The Christian body
commended former President Olusegun Obasanjo for speaking against the
aforementioned plan.
“We commend
sincerely the position of the former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun
Obasanjo for opening up against the planned Islamization of Nigeria. The former
President simply repeated what many of our CAN leaders have said before.
“We had even taken
this in written a form to the Presidency for immediate attention. If what
Obasanjo said should be doubted, what is the justification for the community
cleansing by killer Fulani herdsmen who jump on innocent communities in the
night killing them and taking over their communities? He asked.
“We never saw any
far reaching steps taken to bring these killer herdsmen to book!
“What is the
justification for the Federal Government effort to create and maintain cattle
routes or colony for Fulani herders despite their level of impunity? He asked.
“How can you
justify the Federal Government’s establishment of a radio station for Fulani?
(Though this is being denied recently that is was established for nomadic
education).
“Why can’t strict
security measures that silenced the IPOB in few days be taken against Boko
Haram and killer Fulani Herdsmen?
According to CAN,
“We cannot for many years claim that our borders are porous and nothing is done
about it. Nigeria cannot afford to be losing her citizens for years because we
have an uncontrolled border.
“We commend Chief
Obasanjo’s boldness to speak out at this critical period of the nation. We
wonder what will become the fate of Nigeria and Nigerians if respected and bold
leaders like Obasanjo are no more there to speak.
“We call on the
Federal Government to take seriously the alarm raised by Chief Obasanjo and act
on it if they are to be trusted.
Adding that, “Chief
Obasanjo has spoken the mind of many people and we urge that he should never be
intimidated by government for the sake of peace”.
On the fight
against corruption; CAN said, “While quite a number of Nigerians have been
arrested and prosecuted with others undergoing investigation and prosecution,
it is not news that a lot of corrupt former and present leaders are moving
freely suggesting the selective nature of the fight.
“It is a shame to
our nation and for citizens to believe the notion that when you join the team
of the President or the ruling party then ‘your sins are forgiven’.
“The fight against
corruption must go beyond media propaganda and be wholistic and no less,” the
Christian body stressed.
Speaking on the
forthcoming CAN elections, the CAN Official said, “Each bloc was contacted to
submit names of candidates interested in contesting for the office of the
President.
“Three blocs
indicated interest namely, CCN, OAIC and TEKAN/ECWA. The Electoral College
which was inaugurated early May 2019 has sat on the nominations and elected two
out of the three candidates namely Rev. Dr Samson Ayokunle the current
President of CAN who is going for a possible second tenure from CCN and Rev. Dr
Caleb Solomon Ahima from TEKAN/ECWA.
He maintained that,
“From the forgoing, there are only two stages remaining for the election to be
completed.
“The National
Executive Committee (NEC) will vote for the two nominated candidates and the
person with the highest vote will be deemed elected as President while the
runner up will be considered elected as the Vice President.
According him, “The
process will be completed with the final ratification of the two elected
leaders by the National Assembly of the Association at a later date.”
Plateau attack: How mother escaped with toddler as gunmen kill husband,
five others
Six members of the
same family were on Monday murdered in Nghakai village in Riyom Local
Government Area of Plateau State.
Nghakai village is
15km West of College of Nursing, Vom, a village bordering Jos South LGA of the
state.
The attack, which
was said to have taken place at about 8pm, was reportedly carried out by
unknown gunmen, who spoke amateur versions of Berom and Fulani languages, an
eyewitness said.
Narrating the
incident and how she escaped by the whiskers, Mrs. Lyop Gideon who survived the
attack alongside her 1-year-old baby, said the attackers killed her husband,
Mr. Gideon Gyang, 30, his parents, two siblings and a cousin before fleeing
through a mountain-bound valley.
The 25-year-old
mother-of-one said she escaped by pretending to be dead, while her baby, Esther
Gideon, was unhurt in her slain grandmother’s arms.
“I laid flat on the
ground as they opened fire, killing everyone.
“My baby yelled
from my dead mother in-law’s arms but she was unhurt,” Mrs. Gideon said.
According to her,
the family was having dinner together when the armed men attacked.
She said, “My
husband was in our room few meters away from my father in-law’s room where
seven of us were eating.
“They shot him
first, and my terrified mother-in-law started screaming.
“As he (husband)
was groaning and my mother-in-law screaming, they came into the room where we
were.
“One of them tried
to say something in Berom language but wasn’t so fluent.
“He spoke also in
Fulfulde saying ‘Hurut mu hilleh’ after opening fire in the room but I don’t
think that language was standard too.”
Meantime, the State
Police Command had confirmed the incident.
According to the
Spokesman of the Command, DSP Matthias Tyopev Terna, a
Deputy Commissioner of Police Department of Operations from the Command has
visited the scene.
Terna added, “The
police patrol of the area is being intensified in order to discourage any
reprisal.”
The Command also
solicited credible information to track and arrest the perpetrator or
perpetrators to face justice.
Insecurity: Atiku urges
Buhari govt to end killings in Nigeria
The Peoples
Democratic Party, PDP, 2019 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has reacted
to the killing of 20 people in Katsina State by unknown gunmen.
About 20 people at
three villages in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State were killed by
the unknown gunmen on Tuesday.
Reacting to the
incident, Abubakar called on the Federal Government to review the security
architecture across the country.
In a tweet, the
Wazirin Adamawa wrote: “No one is exempted and no place appears immune to the
scourge of insecurity.
“Our communities
and people deserve to be safe and secured. It is about time our security
architecture is reviewed. Security is absolutely necessary to progress and
development. -AA.”
Leah Sharibu: Buhari govt
under attack for ensuring release of Muslim girls, allowing Christian girl to suffer
President Muhammadu Buhari and the security
forces have been urged to borrow a leaf from Britain on how it coordinated the
search eleven years running of the then 4-year-old Madeleine Mccann and adopt
same method in search of Christian teenager, Miss. Leah Sharibu.
McCann, born 12 May, 2003 disappeared on the
evening of 3 May, 2007 from her bed in a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, a
resort in the Algarve region of Portugal. Her whereabouts, however, remain
unknown till date.
This call was made by the Human Rights
Writers Association of Nigeria, HURIWA in observation of the 16th birthday
anniversary of the Yobe State born Christian teenager.
Leah was abducted by Boko Haram terrorists
alongside her Moslem colleagues, who were all released on the intervention of
the Federal Government.
HURIWA challenged the Nigerian government to
publish the records of how much it has spent so far in the rescue efforts.
The association said it was shameful that
whereas Nigeria pretends to be practicing constitutional democracy with
transparency and accountability as the key principles, it has failed to render
public account of the financial commitments it has made in the rescue of the
hundreds of girls abducted by the armed Islamists of Boko Haram terrorists.
Wondering why Nigerian government do not copy
the positive examples of Great Britain which periodically publishes public
expenses on such cases including the subsisting case of the then little
Madeleine McCann, who disappeared in Portugal about eleven years ago, HURIWA
regretted that the Nigerian government does not even seem to be making any
concrete effort to free Leah Sharibu and the remaining Chibok girls.
HURIWA recalled that in Great Britain,
detectives have been granted more money to continue the search for Madeleine
McCann, nearing 11 years since her disappearance while on holiday with her
family in Portugal.
The statement recalled that so far more than
£11.75m has been spent on the UK’s investigation, named Operation Grange.
HURIWA recalled that British Government’s
funding has been agreed every six months, with £154,000 being granted from
October last year until the end of March 2019 just as it is thought the latest
round of funding will be as much as £150,000.
The group also accused the religious leaders
of the Christian Association of Nigeria of doing next to nothing to ensure that
the Nigerian Government fulfills its obligations to guarantee security of life
of the then 14-year-old Christian girl whose reason for continuous detention by
the terrorists is that she is a Christian.
HURIWA’s statement signed by Emmanuel
Onwubiko, added, “As citizens with equal rights and responsibilities, we demand
that President Muhammadu Buhari should direct the security forces to publish
the financial details of what government has committed in the efforts to rescue
the Chibok and Dapchi school girls kidnapped by the Boko Haram terrorists.
Great Britain does same whenever citizens are missing.”
Terrorists have taken over Nigeria – Ohanaeze backs Pastor Bakare
Igbo apex socio-cultural and political
organization, Ohanaeze, has backed Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Latter Rain
Assembly on his claim that Nigeria was under siege.
Bakare, while addressing his congregants
during church service on Sunday, noted that terrorists, kidnappers and killer
herdsmen were now in charge of Nigeria.
Media and Information Adviser to the
President General of Ohanaeze, Emeka Attamah, told Vanguard that Bakare was
“right because terrorists are really in charge of whatever is happening now in
Nigeria.
“If terrorists are not in charge, why should
officials of this government negotiate with leaders of Miyetti Allah who are
demanding N100 billion to enable its members stop killing Nigerians?”
“I am not even sure that they have not paid
the money. I would not like to be quoted as saying that all the officials of
this government are terrorists but I never knew that Nigeria would descend to
this level of open brigandage. It has never happened before.
“There is nowhere in the world where the
government is in tacit understanding with terrorist organisations.
“Governments usually fight to eliminate
terrorists and not to encourage them.
“The Nigerian government should face
terrorists and treat them as such and not to eat or dine with them,” he said.
Borno Attack: ISIL claims killing of 11
Nigerian soldiers in Borno
ISIL has claimed killing of 11 Nigerian
soldiers in an attack on the northeastern town of Gajiganna, Borno.
Al-Jazeera reports that the group made the
claim at the weekend through its news agency, AMAQ.
ISIL published pictures of burned barracks
and dead bodies it claimed belonged to the soldiers.
The fighters fled after the military called
in air force support and reinforcements from a battalion in a neighbouring
town.
There have been renewed attacks on troops
since the start of 2019.
In a similar attack late April, several
soldiers were reportedly killed at Sabon Gari, Mararaba Kimba, a village
between Biu and Damboa Local Government Areas in Borno.
ISWAP claimed responsibility for the attack.
Residents of Sabon Gari, who spoke to news men said unspecified numbers of
Boko Haram fighters riding in several vehicles and motorcycles attacked a
military base located along the Biu–Damboa road.
“The military base is isolated and this made
it a vulnerable target for the attack. The militants arrived at the location in
their numbers outnumbering the military.
“They set the base on fire, destroyed and
looted equipment before reinforcement arrived and they were repelled after
several hours of battle”, Mallam Usman Kimba said.
Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested a
policeman and a soldier for illegal possession of ammunition.
This was contained in a statement on Monday
by Col. Sagir Musa, the Acting Director Army Public Relations.
Musa said that a Mobile policeman, Sgt.
Markus John, with number PNo 383106 was arrested at Njimtilo checkpoint on
Maiduguri-Damaturu road, while on transit to Lagos.

(12NA672586), also at the Njimtilo checkpoint.
He alleged that they were in possession of
one disassembled AK 47 Rifle.
Musa restated the army’s appeal to the public
to continue to provide useful information about suspicious movement of
terrorists/criminals wherever they were seen hibernating in the country.

Maiduguri – Damaturu road in possession of 2 magazines, 146 rounds of 7.62 mm
Special ammunition and one round of Anti Aircraft Gun concealed in his bag
while on transit to Lagos State.
“Recall that on the 10th of May 2019, troops
of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in conjunction with the Nigerian Police, arrested
14NA7113208 Private Paul Ojochegbe and 12NA672586 Lance Corporal Oko Eke in
possession of one disassembled AK 47 Rifle at the same N’jimtilo check point.
“Nigerian Army will remain resolute in ending
terrorism and other forms of insecurities across the country,” the statement
said.
The army also reiterated its appeal to the
public to continue to provide useful information about suspicious movement of
terrorists/criminals wherever they are seen hibernating in Nigeria.
