Theresa May to officially step down as leader of the Conservative Party today

 

Theresa May will officially step down as the leader of the Conservative Party today but will remain as prime minister until her successor is chosen.  

May announced her resignation two weeks ago, saying it was a matter of deep regret that she had been unable to deliver Brexit. Eleven Conservative MPs are vying to replace her as party leader and ultimately, prime minister.  

Nominations open from 10:00 BST on Monday and close at 17:00 BST that day.  Mrs May remains acting leader while the contest takes place. Leadership candidates need eight MPs to back them. MPs will then vote for their preferred candidates in a series of secret ballots to be held on 13, 18, 19 and 20 June.

Boris Johnson seeks to become British PM after Theresa May’s resignation

 

Britain’s Boris Johnson confirmed Thursday he will seek to become prime minister when Theresa May quits as she promised to set out a departure timetable early next month.  

“Of course I’m going to go for it,” the former foreign minister, ex-mayor of London and leading Brexit campaigner said at a business event in Manchester.

The decision comes as little surprise as Johnson, one of Britain’s most identifiable politicians known simply as “Boris”, has long been known to covet the top job. But it effectively fires the starting gun on a race that already has more than a dozen runners and riders even though there is no official vacancy.  

May has promised to step down once the first stage of Britain’s exit from the European Union is secured, but this has been put in doubt by repeated Brexit delays. At a meeting of senior members of her Conservative party on Thursday, May resisted growing demands to set out a detailed plan for her departure right now.

MSSN Urges Buhari To Ignore British PM, May's Call For Same Sex Marriage

The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit, on Wednesday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to without wasting much time, reject British Prime Minister, Theresa May’s advice on same-sex marriage.

MSSN Lagos Amir (President), Dr. Saheed Ashafa in a statement marking the 64th year of establishing MSSN in Nigeria, insisted that “such a suggestion would increase immorality and crimes in the country”.

He urged President Buhari to consider May’s suggestion on same-sex marriage as “a mere freedom of expression”.

May had at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting holding in the British capital urged Nigeria and other countries to revoke laws banning same-sex marriage. 

But, Ashafa cautioned that Nigeria should not be lured by her promise that the United Kingdom will support any country that legalises same-sex marriage.

He explained that such would increase immorality and crimes in the country.

Ashafa while speaking also frowned at the silence of the presidency on the matter, adding that “the president’s silence is worrisome”.

He appealed to President Buhari to continuously reiterate the position of Nigeria at all fora where such was discussed.

He also cautioned that Nigeria should not be lured by PM May’s promise that the United Kingdom’s will support any country that legalises same-sex marriage.

Ashafa said, “Theresa May’s call for support of same-sex marriage is a mere wish and also an exercise of one’s freedom of expression.

“To us, it has no effect. We know the position of Nigeria on same-sex, it remains an abomination and there is no doubt about it. It must not change. It is one of the factors helping to reduce crimes in Nigeria.

“Theresa and others with similar desire only need to remember that we are an independent nation with our own autonomy; our freedom of thought remains sacrosanct. The same-sex marriage ideology is a practice that should never happen in Nigeria.

“Here in Nigeria, our constitution recognises multiplicity of religion and God as the supreme being, and as such His forbidden are consciously avoided. Same-sex marriage is unlawful, and it is so held. It is an abomination and a call to it is a call to destruction.”
