Ekiti state University student attempts suicide over his failure in one of his courses (photo)

 

A final year Accounting student of the Ekiti State University who was involved in the mass failure in one of the courses, attempted suicide yesterday Wednesday June 5th.

According to Lere Olayinka, an aide of former governor of the state Ayo Fayose, the student was rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH), Ado Ekiti where doctors are currently battling to save his life.

University of Calabar: three students suspended for alleged robbery, forgery and cultism

 

Three students of the University of Calabar have been suspended for alleged involvement in criminal activities such as robbery, cultism and forgery.  

According to a statement by the Registrar of the institution, Mr Moses Abang, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Zana Akpagu, approved the suspension of the students. Those suspended include Bassey Divine, a 400-level student of the Department of Sociology, who was accused of alleged forgery of the GSS result sheets, and Ofem David, a 300-level student of the Department of Theatre, Film and Media Studies, who was suspended for alleged involvement in robbery.  

The third student, Collins Agbor, a 300-level student of the Department of Genetics and Biotech, was suspended for alleged cult-related activities. The suspended students were advised to stay away from the campus while preparing to appear before the Students’ Disciplinary Committee for further investigation.  

The respective deans and heads of departments were directed to take note and ensure full compliance with the directive.

Oyo state teachers commence indefinite strike

 

The Oyo State wing of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) today (Monday) commenced an indefinite strike due to delay in payment of salaries of primary school teachers and other requests.

The union said the strike became necessary due to the inability of the state government to meet its demands.

NUT had last week, issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Oyo State Government to clear and settle the backlogs of salaries owed its members.

The union, while lamenting over unpaid salaries of primary school teachers, gave the state government 72 hours notice or go on indefinite strike if the situation is not reversed.

NUT Chairman, Comrade Z.T Adedoyin and Secretary, Comrade N.M. Abdullahi, in a joint statement issued after a meeting of the union, lamented over complementary allowances of promotions of the teachers.

The union also listed issues worrying the members of the union as non-implementation of the approval and accompany promotion benefits to the primary school teachers by the Oyo State Joint Account Allocation Committee (JAAC), delay in payment of salary to primary school teachers, delay in the promotion of grade level 14 to 15, continued withholding of 2018 leave grant and delay in the clearance of teachers allegedly accused of illegal promotion.

The teachers said that they were commencing the strike today because, efforts made by the state government to persuade the teachers, met brick walls.

We gathered that the state government had invited the leaders of the union to a parley on May 15 but no deal was reached.

The NUT acknowledged that its leadership met with the state Head of Service and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs on May 15 during which both government functionaries made passionate appeal to them to shelve the proposed strike.

The union, however, but stated that their appeal could not change anything because none of their demands was met.

The teachers are downing tools over delay in the promotion of primary school teachers from salary grade level 14 to 15, as well as delay in payment in payment of salary of primary school teachers.

Abuja teachers begin strike over unpaid allowances

 

Local Education Authority (LEA) teachers in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have embarked on a three-day warning strike over unpaid promotion arrears and allowances.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the primary schools visited in Kuje were securely locked up with no pupil seen on the premises.

Mr Mohammed Ahmed, Chairman, Kuje Area Council Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), said that the strike was called to press for the urgent payment of promotion arrears and allowances.

Ahmed said that the union began the strike on Wednesday after several efforts to get the council administration to pay the arrears and allowances failed.

“We have made several efforts and an agreement was reached with the area council on Jan. 8 for the payment of the promotion arrears.

“During the signing of the agreement, the council pledged that it would not default, but now the reverse is the case and we have no option than to call for the strike,” he said.

The chairman said that negotiations with relevant stakeholders to end the strike had commenced.

He, however, said that a meeting held on Wednesday ended in deadlock.

Mr Bulus Danladi, the Secretary, Kuje Area Council LEA, said that steps were being taken to resolve the issues at stake to get the teachers back to the classrooms.

In a bid to promote educational excellence in Nigeria and propel the nation towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), Musa Halilu Ahmed Foundation founded by the Dujima Adamawa Alhaji Musa Halilu Ahmed, has empowered no fewer than 2000 pupils and 30 teachers of Government Model Secondary School Daura, Katsina state.

The foundation known for its charitable drive across the country in areas of education, youth development and poverty alleviation/wealth creation empowered students with materials such as school uniforms, bags, exercise books, textbooks and pens.

It also equipped the school with dozens of stationeries, public address system among others to boost educational/administrative activities of the teachers.

The altruistic act is borne out of the passion to reduce the current high number of out-of-school children in Nigeria estimated at 13.5 million by UNICEF, and to combat the menace of illiteracy in Nigeria.

The foundation have it as part of their 2019 goals to send 50 thousand out of school children back to school and provide over 200 scholarships to those willing to acquire higher education.

“We recognise that it is a big task to provide quality education for every Nigerian due to the limited allocation towards education, as such public school students and schools lack access to essential educational resources.

“We are optimistic that this programme will help to bridge knowledge inequality by providing students as well as public schools access to learning resources that aid academic excellence and enable teachers to discharge their obligatory duties seamlessly”, the Founder, Alhaji Musa Halilu Ahmed, said in a statement delivered at the ceremony.

Musa Halilu Ahmed Foundation called on well-meaning Nigerians home and abroad to contribute their quota towards nation building and invest in the education of the future leaders of Nigeria.

It added that investment in education equips children with knowledge and confidence with which they will grow up to live responsibly and productively.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic, University of Calabar, Prof. Uche Amalu has insisted that payment of relevant school charges and dues was precondition for taking part in the Second semester examinations.

Addressing final year students of the Faculty of Management Sciences in the institution, Prof Amalu said the University took the tough stance after observing with dismay the laxity shown towards prompt payment of charges.

He told the students who had clustered round the gate leading to the Vice Chancellor’s block that they will not be admitted into the examination hall until a definite and bold step towards payment of school charges has been complied with.

He admitted that though the Vice Chancellor is aware that some students come from humble backgrounds, it will not, however, deter management from enforcing its decision owing to the long period of grace observed and the non-nonchalant attitude of many students.

Prof Amalu said that the Prof. Zana Akpagu administration will be failing in its duty of providing basic necessities to students if it trifles with payment of school charges.

On the plea by the students of being offered another opportunity to take part in examinations that they have missed, the Deputy Vice Chancellor said their case will be given attention by the Vice Chancellor after payment of relevant school charges.

University Of Calabar VC Warns Students Against Cultism, Indecent Dressing

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Zana Akpagu has warned new students to desist from cultism and other forms of crimes.

He said that appropriate sanctions would be meted out on students found belonging to nocturnal organizations and cult groups.

Akpagu gave the warning at the 40th matriculation ceremony of the institution, which involved over 9,200 students for the 2017/2018 academic session.

He noted that the occasion marked the official entry of every new student into the higher institution of learning since it was a statutory gathering to formally admit deserving and qualified candidates that had been offered admission into the institution.

He further said that the ceremony also signified the conclusion of the admission processes for the year, disclosing a total number of 9200 candidates were offered admission from a total number of 37, 278 candidates who applied to the University of Calabar.

Prof Akpagu informed the freshmen that they were not expected in any manner to socialize with any association that had been proscribed by the University such as the infamous “secret cults”, noting that the penalties misconducts were contained in the University Handbook.

While advising them to show respect to colleagues and staff of the University so as to make their stay fruitful and productive, Prof Akpagu urged them to be modest and decent in their dressing and approach to issues.

The Vice Chancellor assured students of maximum security in the University, while appealing that they should not hesitate to report any suspicious activity to the Dean, Students Affairs, Security Officers and the Courses’ Advisers.

According to him, the institution was working assiduously in ensuring that the University was put on the global map, hence, going into collaboration and linkages that were yielding very positive dividends to the university community.

He disclosed that the university is on the verge of achieving uninterrupted power supply via an ongoing Solar Energy Project with the German Government, including Scholarship awarded to 47 deserving Students with a commitment to make it an annual event by the people Republic of China through her Embassy in Nigeria as well as the introduction of Korean Studies into the Curriculum of the Bassey Andah Centre for African and Asian Studies.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, Abia State polytechnic, Aba chapter on Monday resumed indefinite strike following eleven months of unpaid salaries by the management of the institution.

NAIJA VOICE gathered that the union has insisted that the strike must go on despite the threat by the school management to sack them if they embarked on the action.

The lecturers, who were brandishing placards with different inscriptions, such as “No To Eboh”, “OVI sack Eboh Now”, With Eboh, No Negotiation”, called for the sack of the rector of the polytechnic, Professor Ezionye Eboh over his insensitivity to the plight of the polytechnic lecturers.

The union said that they would only call off the strike when their salaries and wages were paid.

At the polytechnic gate were heavily armed soldiers who were dispatched to the school to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

Efforts to reach the Chairman of ASUP, Engr. Godswill Uma was unsuccessful.

But contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic, Mrs. Chinyere Eze declined to comment on the strike, saying she was not in the position to speak on the action of the polytechnic lecturers.

She said, “To be honest with you, I’m not the rightful person to comment. I’m busy in the office. I will get back to you”.

AAUA Students Issue 7day Ultimatum To Ondo Govt, School Governing Council To End 80 Days Old Strike Or Risk Their Wrath

Students of the Ondo State-owned Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA) have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the state government to re-open the institution.

The students’ ultimatum was contained in a statement signed by the officers of the institution’s Students’ Union Government led by the president, Ijanusi Olawale, the Secretary, Adekunle Ayo-Lawrence and the Public Relations Officer, Adelowo Samson.

According to the students, if the government failed to do the needful at the end of the ultimatum, which starts counting from today (April 2) the government should be ready to face the wrath of the entire students.

The students lamented that they had been staying at home for more than 80 days doing nothing.

“It is quite pathetic and sardonic that the government has been quite undisturbed by this disheartening predicament.

“The government has been so unperturbed by the fact that we are wallowing and wasting away at home.

“We have wasted a whole semester at home doing nothing. The hope of our 500 Level Law students going to Law School is now hanging in the wind.

“We are made to go through all this unpalatable rigours all because of the unfortunate indecisiveness of the government.

“We have been silent enough. We will not allow the administration of the government to toy with our future.

“We have been pushed to the wall, and it is now highly sacrosanct, germane and imperative to take our destiny into our hands.

“On this note, we are strongly giving out a seven working-day ultimatum to the government and also to the governing council of AAUA, to facilitate all necessary things to bring about the resumption of AAUA.

“This ultimatum count down shall kick-start on Monday, April 2, 2018.

“Failure of the government and the governing council to do the needful will draw the wrath of the Nigerian students as we will be left with no choice than to take the centre stage,” the students stated.

They sent copies of the statement to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and security agencies in the state.

Cross Revers SUBEB Demotes Head Teacher Over Forgery

 

The Head teacher of Obanjom Memorial Primary School, Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area of Cross River Mr. Obongho Linus Ikpi has been demoted to a classroom teacher.

His demotion was ordered by the Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (CR-SUBEB) for payslip forgery.

The payslip was purportedly forged to enable the suspect access computer allocation from the Head of Service.

“SUBEB checked records and discovered that the alleged deduction in the payslip was not recorded there. Upon further interrogation, Ikpi confessed to having forged the payslip,” a source said.

Confirming the forgery, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Dr Stephen Odey who expressed disappointment over the incident said, “This man came to my payroll unit with this payslip claiming that some money was deducted from his salary for Computer and when he went to Head of service to collect the computer, they told him to come here for refunds because the money he was claiming wasn’t remitted to them from SUBEB.”

Odey said the demotion of the suspect was to serve as deterrent to others.

“To serve as a deterrent, we have decided to demote and suspend him while investigations continue. We have directed that the Executive Secretary should inform the deputy to take over as head teacher with immediate effect”, Odey said.

Warning Teachers to desist from all forms of criminality, Odey said the eagle eye of the Board was upon them.

“We are setting an eagle eye on teachers because from what he told us, we believe strongly that others have either attempted to do this or are doing this”, he said.

In his confessional Statement, Ikpi said, “I doctored pay advice for the month of January 2018 with an amount of three thousand six hundred and ninety-five naira for collection of computer equipment from Head of Service. The act was discovered by SUBEB payroll staff”.

He however appealed to the Board for forgiveness.

“I am pleading that I should be forgiven for such obnoxious behaviour. It will never happen again,” he appealed.

Ekiti Youths, FUOYO Students Petition EFCC, Calls For Investigation Of The VC, Soremilekun

Scores of students from Ekiti State under the umbrella of Nigeria Youths Coalition (NYC) on Wednesday stormed the Ibadan regional Head office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), to protest what they described as “financial misappropriation” at Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State.

The protesters, who were led by the Coordinator and the Secretary of the group, Comrade Shina Awopeju and Comrade Tetteh Ebenezer, respectively urged the EFCC to investigate financial misappropriation by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Kayode Soremilekun.

The youths in a five-page petition submitted to the office of the anti-graft agency, a copy of which was made available to us, itemised various allegations against the Vice Chancellor, Professor Soremilekun.

The offence allegedly committed by the VC include: “illegal purchase of Prado jeep at inflated price of N25 million.

“Purchase of two Nigeria-used Toyota Camry (2006 model) at the sum of N5.25million and four Toyota Camry at N10.5million, payment of N40.1million into a bank account belonging to Kodelac Nigeria Limited in Ile-Ife, Osun state without following procurement guidelines of payment.”

The youths also alleged that N19.1million was paid twice for a-2-block laboratory at Ikole campus of the institution.

The youths claimed that “N1.98 million was paid into unknown account operated by the University with a commercial bank for unknown contract.”

The petition also said that a Tokunbo CRV car was purchased at N23.9million for the Governing Council Chairman of the institution.

Awopeju, while addressing journalists shortly after the submission of the petition, declared that the group comprised students and youths from Ekiti State.

While dismissing the insinuation that the group was being used by some group of people to fight the Vice chancellor of the institution, Awopeju informed journalists that “the move was in support for the anti-corruption crusade of the federal government.”

But the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Soremilekun while responding to the allegations, said it was all lies.

Soremilekun in a telephone conversation with journalists said “It is all lies. We are under investigation by the EFCC and the ICPC already. If they have good intention, why going that far?

“It was handwork of one of the principal officers of the institution who was suspended. The petition has been flying around for sometime now.”

UTME 2018: Candidates Laments As JAMB Withdraw Results After Release

 

Some of the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, candidates have cried foul, demanding reasons for the removal of their earlier released results from the website of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB.

The candidates who spoke on separate interviews with Vanguard, are asking the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB to explain why it displayed “You do not have any result yet” or “you did not write the examination,” after such results were earlier published.

One of the candidates Max Odinukweze said, “I had my UTME on March 10, and three days after my examination, I checked and saw my result using my phone.

“A day later, I went back to check to print it out, I was surprised when I saw the response, ‘No Result Yet’ and since that time till now, I have not seen my result.”

Another candidate Michael O. who expressed frustration, said, ”I took my Exam on March 10 and saw my results few days after.

“But when I checked two days ago, the result was no longer there. I have a feeling my result is among the withheld and I am unsure why.

“It would be quite unfortunate if I do not see my result again.”

For Ochuko “I wrote my exam on March 10. I checked it once and saw it. The following day, I tried to check it again so that I could print it out but it showed me ‘No result yet.’ I don’t understand what is going on.

“Please I need explanation.”

Ambode Orders Pupils To Sing National Anthem In Yoruba Daily

Lagos governor Akinwunmi Ambode on Tuesday ordered public and private school principals in the state that students should sing the National Anthem in Yoruba Language daily.

Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, relayed the directive at a meeting with Principals and Head Teachers of public schools in Lagos.

She said that Yoruba Language would also be made a compulsory subject for students.

Adebule said that Wednesdays had been declared ‘Yoruba Speaking Day’ in schools, with all teaching and learning activities from assembly period to closing being done in Yoruba.

”Governor Ambode wants me to pass this message to you, that henceforth, Yoruba language be made compulsory in both private and public schools.

”The National Anthem must be sung in Yoruba on a daily basis too.

“The Egbe Akomolede has done the translation and we will send the copies of the Yoruba version to your schools by Monday so you can begin to teach the students.

”I have also met with the owners of private schools and we have relayed this directive to them.

”We are also considering translating the textbooks of other subjects into Yoruba Language because I believe that when students are taught in their mother language, learning will be easy and their level of performance will improve.

”The state government is passionate about this Law, so we do not lose our language, culture and heritage,” she said.

Adebule said the Ministry of Education was doing an assessment to ascertain the number of Yoruba teachers that would be required to effectively teach the language in public schools.

She appealed to the school managers to cooperate with the government to drive and ensure the effective implementation of the Yoruba Language Preservation and Promotion Law.

Lanre Ogunyemi, Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Education, said the development would be beneficial to the younger generation and generations unborn.

”In Finland, you must pass the Finnish Language before you are offered admission into high institutions. Same is done in Germany, China and other developed countries.

”We need to adopt such to drive development and foster national unity. I beg you all to key into this law and make it work, ” Ogunyemi said.

Buahri Appoints A New Rector For Auchi Polytechnics 

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Dr Momodu Sanusi Jimah, as the substantive Rector of Auchi Polytechnic, in Edo state.

A statement by Mustapha Oshoibugie, the Chief Public Relations Officer of the institution in Benin on Tuesday said that the appointment takes effect from February 23 and for a period of four years.

Jimah, until his appointment, was the acting Rector of the Polytechnic.

He is also an Alumnus of the Polytechnic where he obtained the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Urban and Regional Planning in 1982.

He obtained the Post Graduate Diploma in Urban and Regional Planning in 1997 and Masters in Business Administration in 2003.

Jimah is a member of several professional bodies including Membership of the Nigeria Institute of Town Planners, Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Economists of Nigeria and Fellow, Institute of Entrepreneurship of Nigeria.

Other positions including; Dean, School of Environmental Studies; Director, Centre for Entrepreneurial Development; Director, Auchi Polytechnic Consultancy Services and Assistant Dean, School of Part-Time Studies.
