A group of lawmakers have spoken up over accusation of vote buying against the Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila

We reported that a House of Representatives group, G7, are seeking legal redress over alleged proof of vote-buying and gross impunity by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Alhaji Sani Omolori.

Omolori, who supervised the June 11 election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker in the House of Representatives, is being accused of having condoned impunity among the lawmakers.

Making references to photographic images and video evidence being released to back up their claims, the group asserted that they are only embarking on a principled struggle, adding that while the members have no personal grudges against any person or political party, they will not condone any illegitimacy in the election of the person or persons who will lead the House of Representatives.

But, reacting, a House of Representatives member Khadijah Bukar Abba on Monday said that Gbajabiamila did not induce his colleagues financially to vote for him.

Abba, the acting spokesman of the House, spoke shortly after the inauguration of four adhoc committees by the Speaker on Monday.

Also Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, who stood in for the ad Committee Chairman, said Gbajabiamila had no reason to induce any lawmaker as he worked hard enough to deserve the seat.

Ihonvbere said: “For us, we have conducted a democratic election that was held and aired live. At the end, winners emerged and we all witnessed the losers congratulating the winner on the floor.

“To us as a House, everything is now in the past and we are focused on the serious legislative business we are are here to carry out, to make the House and the country better.

“As far as we are concerned, nobody received money, nobody was enticed to vote. As a matter of fact, no one campaigned intensely robust more than Gbajabiamila, and it went beyond the call of duty to explain what he has to offer.

“At times he went to parts of the country with over 120 lawmakers, with that kind of work, he needed to buy no vote”.

Cross River: INEC re-affirms John Owan-Enoh as APC governorship candidate

 

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday at a renewed sitting of the Governorship Elections Petition Tribunal in Calabar, Cross River, reaffirmed the nomination of Senator John Owan Enoh as the lawful candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the March 9 governorship election.

The commission, while arguing in a suit no EPT/CAL/COV01/2019, however, said “Sen. Enoh was not excluded from the elections as claimed by the petitioner since he participated in the exercise having been re-listed.”

Senator Owan Enoh had petitioned the electoral umpire, which is the Second Respondent and Governor Ben Ayade, the First Respondent in the matter alleged unlawful exclusion from the election.

Counsel to INEC, Dele Adeshina had stated that “Sen. Enoh was the duly nominated candidate of the APC and that the commission had issued a letter dated 8th March to that effect.

Apparently smarting from the petition, Adeshina said “the candidate, however, participated in the election and so was not excluded.”

In his argument, Counsel to Sen. Enoh, Awa Kalu (SAN), said the petitioner would not have participated in an election if he was excluded.

According to him, the issue of faction as raised by the first respondent Counsel does not exist in internal democracy especially when it has to do with the sponsorship or nomination of candidates.

He contended that “the issue of factions applies only in the parliament when there’s a crisis within a party leading to cross-carpeting by legislators and not on the basis of nomination of candidates for election.

He averred that ”Sen. Owan Enoh was duly nominated for the Governorship election by his party but was unlawfully excluded for the March 9 polls by the commission”.

The legal luminary, however, challenged the first and second respondents to be the first to prove otherwise, the petition on exclusion stressing that INEC had never argued against a phone call made by the State Electoral Commissioner (REC) at 12 pm on the elections day congratulating the petitioner for being relisted as the APC Candidate for the race.

Counsel to Sen. Ayade, Paul Erokoro (SAN) had argued that “though the Petitioner was nominated for the election but his nomination was done by a faction of his party”.

Justice Josiah Majebi has put the ruling on the onus of proof on exclusion or otherwise for Tuesday, March 17th 2019.

Governor Emeka Ihedioha, has approved the suspension of Chairmen, Vice Chairmen, Councilors and political appointees of the local governments of Imo State and constitution of Interim Management Committees for six months.

The suspension is contained in the instrument signed by the Governor, pursuant to the recommendation made to him by the Imo State House of Assembly.

A statement on Monday by his Chief Press Secretary, Chibuike Onyeukwu, said this was in pursuant also, to the provisions of Sections 4, 5, and 6 of the Local Government Administration (Amendment) law, 2019 and S.73(3) of Imo State Local Government Administration Law No 15 of 2000 (as amended) and all other laws enabling him.

“The Governor has set up Interim Management Committees to manage the affairs of each Local Government.

“Consequently, the Directors of Administration and General Services (DAGS) of each Local Government have been directed to take over management, pending the confirmation of Interim Management Committees by the State Assembly,” he said.

In a similar development, the Governor approved the dissolution and removal of the chairman and members of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC).

This followed a resolution supported by two-thirds majority of the State Assembly rendered on 6th June, 2019 seeking their removal from office.

“The action is also in accordance with the provisions of S.7(1) of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission Law and all other extant laws of the State”, the statement added.

“The Commission will be reconstituted in due course to put in place the machinery for conducting a credible election into the local governments.

“The Governor further directs that these officers handover to the most senior civil servant in the Commission.”

The lawmaker representing Lagos Central senatorial district at the National Assembly, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to show magnanimity by appointing many women into his new cabinet.

She lamented that the National Assembly was gradually turning into an “exclusive gentlemen’s club”.

Tinubu linked the apathy amongst women in running for elective political positions to a number of reasons.

She stated this yesterday in Abuja at an event that also had the presence of the First Lady, Aisha Buhari.

She said, “We are still watching and hoping that maybe, the President will be magnanimous enough to appoint a lot of female ministers but they should be ministers who will not disappoint us and do the work; not to go there and embezzle money.

“You know the last experience was not actually pleasant, it should be women who are ready to serve and make the necessary sacrifice.

“Do we need women in the public place? Yes, that is why I am here to encourage the younger generation to reach for the sky.

“It has always been seven or eight women in the National Assembly, the National Assembly is turning into exclusively a gentleman’s club and I think that if we are not careful, that is what it will turn out to be and it is quite sad.

“I don’t think they are being good sportsmen; they are quite vicious when it comes to positions; everybody is striving and I think we women have to start raising boys that are gender-friendly. We raised all these selfish men and this is what we pay for that.

“The coming generation should begin to raise men that would not feel threatened by a woman who is in a top position, so we still have a lot to do but the current men that are here are very vicious when it comes to seeking for top positions.

“Not that they don’t allow women, it is just that everyone is striving so hard and you can see that the violence in politics is keeping women back, there are a lot of things keeping women back but the point is that the men are not just gender-friendly.

“I was just looking when we went for registration today and I was just looking because it was just a sea of men.”

Another member of the Imo State House of Assembly, Amara Iwuanyanwu, representing Nwangele Constituency, has defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The lawmaker is the son of a late political and public relations giant, Chyna Iwuanyanwu, who died about two years ago.

The latest defection, which was made known at a stakeholders’ meeting in his constituency, and later in a statement from the defector’s media consultant, MacDonald Obinna, yesterday brings the total number of PDP seats in the House to 17 from 13 (when the general elections were held).

APGA has four members, from the initial six and the Action Alliance (AA) four, from the six after the general elections.

The defectors included the Speaker, Dr. Chiji Collins, a ranking member from Isiala Mbano Constituency, who changed political sides from the APGA to the PDP during the valedictory session of the Eighth Assembly last Monday.

Lawman Duruji (Ehime Mbano Constituency), who had nominated Collins, a day later, defected from the AA to the PDP alongside Kennedy Ibeh (Obowo Constituency), also a nominator, who defected from the AA to the PDP.

Iwuanyanwu, according to the statement, said he consulted with the PDP leaders of the 11 wards that make up the constituency, adding “I took the decision not to allow the constituency play a second fiddle.”

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has commenced preparation for Kogi and Bayelsa governorship elections.

Adeyemi Moyegun, PDP Deputy Director, Mobilization and Organisations made the announcement on Sunday.

A terse statement he signed said the party has approved Tuesday September 3, 2019 for the gubernatorial primary elections in both Kogi and Bayelsa states.

It added that “The Ward Congresses to elect the Ad-Hoc Delegates is Scheduled for Thur. Aug. 22, 2019, while LGA Congresses for National Delegates will take place on Mon. Aug. 26, 2019.

“Full time-table will be released once same is approved by NWC.”

In May, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced shift of date for the polls to November 16, from November 2.

According to the amended timetable and schedule of activities signed by Secretary to the Commission, Mrs Rose Oriaran-Anthony, notice for the elections would be released on August 17.

Collection of forms CF001 and CF002 by political parties from INEC has been slated for August 18, while the conduct of parties primaries would hold from August 18 to September 5.

Also, election campaign would commence August 18, while October 2 would be the last day for submission of nomination forms. Political campaigns ends November 14.

Chief Benson Agadaga, an associate and kinsman of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has declared interest to contest the Bayelsa State governorship election slated for Nov. 16.

Agadaga, National Chairman, Ogbia Brotherhood Worldwide, a socio-cultural group, spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Yenagoa.

According to him, his aspiration was borne out of his desire to continue to serve the people of Bayelsa at the highest level, having served as Commissioner for Information.

Agadaga is the current Special Adviser on Establishment to Bayelsa Governor, Seriake Dickson.

“I seize this opportunity to seek the support and blessings of the foremost socio-cultural organisation of the people of Ogbia kingdom and entire people of Bayelsa to contest in the gubernatorial election.

“This is in furtherance of my passion for public service in many capacities and this time, I seek the office of the governor and I appeal to the people to support my ambition,” he said.

Reacting to the development, King George Lawson, an Ogbia monarch, said he was excited over Agadaga’s intention to contest as governor.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Sunday reacted angrily to recent comments by MKO Abiola’s son, Kola, and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Bode George, that ex-governor Bola Tinubu begged the late Gen. Sani Abacha for the post of a commissioner in Lagos State.

Joe Igbokwe, APC Publicity Secretary in Lagos, in a statement quoted Kola saying “It was after Tinubu had lost out that he decided to join hands with the National Democratic Coalition for the actualization of June 12 mandate.”

Igbokwe, in his reaction, said although APC did not find the need to “dignify a collapsed and a failed politician in Lagos or a little kid without sense of history with a response at a time like this, but we changed our mind because we do not want to allow lies to be told a thousand times so that some people will not believe it as the truth.”

He noted that before the annulment of June 12 1993 Presidential Elections Governors, Senators, House of Reps Members, State Assembly members had been in place and Tinubu was one of the elected Senators from Lagos.

The spokesman quipped: “Now how can an elected Senator be asking for a mere appointment as Commissioner? Does it make sense to anybody who is privileged to be a sensible person?”

“In one breath the story tellers said Asiwaju asked for the post of a commissioner and in another they told us he wanted to be Deputy Sole Administrator Of Lagos. Now, do we have anything like Deputy Sole Administrator then? Was it in existence? Are they not liars from the pit of hell?”

“We do understand the reason why Chief Bode George always have this penchant to get at Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the drop of a hat and even when it is not necessary. The gap between Asiwaju BAT and Chief Bode George in terms of political sagacity, leadership, achievements, follower ship, capacity, acceptance, credibility etc is a huge one in favour of Asiwaju.

Shehu Sani, a former Senator representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, has warned President Muhammadu Buhari to be wary of his state governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

Sani warned that Buhari would soon taste the venom of El-Rufai’s treachery.

In a post on his Facebook page, the former lawmaker stressed that the governor was known for betraying those who helped him ascend power when they are no longer important to him.

He wrote: “Your treacherous history of jumping from one godfather to another is well-known to all Nigerians.

“And I have always believed that it’s a matter of time before PMB will have a taste of your patented venom and perfidy once you reach a point that he is of no further importance to you.”

The former lawmaker disclosed that before he dumped the All Progressives Congress, APC, he told Buhari, party National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole; and National Leader, Bola Tinubu, that El-Rufai would attack them too, “when the time is right.”

“Before I left the APC, I told PMB and Oshiomhole and Tinubu that you will insult, betray and fight them. It is in your DNA.

“The liquor of power makes you think and act like a god, enjoy it while it lasts. It seems your mind is still troubled,” he added.

Members of the Jigawa State House of Assembly have re-elected Hon. Idrith Garba Kareka as Speaker of the State’s 7th assembly.

The new Speaker emerged as the winner of the position unopposed as the members nominated him alone.

Member representing Kanya Babba constituency, Hon. Haladu Usman nominated Kareka for Speaker of the 7th assembly and was seconded by Hon. Abubakar Sadiq Jallo, a member representing Hadejia constituency.

Meanwhile, the member representing Guri constituency, Hon. Suleiman Musa Kadra was elected as the Deputy Speaker.

The Clerk to the House, Malam Ya’u Malam Madori announced Kareka and Kadra as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 7th assembly following the absence of other nominations for the positions by the members.

Kareka is a member representing Jahun local government constituency and was elected as Speaker of the 6th assembly, but was impeached by the members for allegedly working against the interest of his colleagues.

In his acceptance speech, Speaker Kareka thanked members for the confidence reposed on him, and promised to work in the best interest of the 7th assembly.

A former Senate Leader and former Chairman, Board of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN) has led a team of eight other lawyers to represent the House of Assembly candidates of the APC from the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State who are prosecuting their petitions before the Hon. Justice A. A. Babawale-led Tribunal.

Ndom-Egba said that after proceedings of the Tribunal that he believes in the capacity of the Election Petition Tribunals sitting in Calabar to dispense of the petitions before them fairly and objectively. He noted, “The judiciary has shown itself as a major bastion of Nigeria’s democracy over the years and has continued to be the last hope of the common man. ”

The Distinguished Senator and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, had earlier admonished all the candidates of the party who are pursuing election matters before the tribunal to do so with diligence, determination and hope, noting that from what he has observed in the days he has attended the tribunal sessions, the candidates have selected very capable and experienced lawyers to argue their matters.

Senator Ndoma-Egba, himself a litigant before the tribunal arising from his exclusion as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State in the February, 2019 National Assembly elections, had in an earlier interaction with the candidates assured them of his support and encouragement as they seek justice.

He maintained, “The Party was massively supported during the elections and still enjoys a huge followership in the State” and sued for their continuous support and prayers of all APC faithful in the State for the candidates who are currently seeking redress in the Tribunal.”

When asked about how his matter was progressing in the tribunal, Ndoma-Egba responded that, “As a senior lawyer, I am mindful of the fact that commenting on a matter before a court or tribunal is sub-judice and superfluous”.

He, therefore, refrained from making any specific statement on the status of his petition before the tribunal, but reiterated that he is hopeful that justice will be served at the end of the tribunal’s work.

Candidates and supporters of the APC who thronged the Moore Road, Calabar premises of the tribunal, during every sitting expressed their appreciation of the gesture by Senator Ndoma-Egba.

They argued that it is uncommon for such a highly placed leader in society to offer his professional services and expertise, in such circumstances.

They enjoined other bigwigs of the party to emulate Senator Ndoma-Egba in rendering moral and financial support to the party and its candidates who are pursuing litigation before the Election Petition Tribunal. The matter had earlier been adjourned to August 15 for filing of written addresses and hearing.

Ahead of Tuesday’s inauguration of the National Assembly, front-line contender for the position of Deputy Senate President, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, has withdrawn from the race.

In a statement signed by his Press Secretary, Kayode Fakuyi, stated that “in deference to President Muhammadu Buhari”, Senator Borofice steps down for another contender for the position.

It was gathered that the decision was rectified last night at the caucus meeting of All Progressives Congress, APC, Senators-elect.

A source however disclosed that the third-term senator representing Ondo North Senatorial District stepped down for Senator Ovie Omo-Agege from Delta State.

The press statement issued on Monday read, “Some weeks ago, Distinguished Senator (Prof.) Robert Ajayi Boroffice, OON declared intention, through letters addressed to Senators-elect, to seek the office of Deputy Senate President. The intention to contest was anchored on the deep conviction that with his excellent public service record, rich legislative experience and personality, he has the best credentials for the position.

“Consequently, he embarked on extensive consultations with party leaders, senators-elect and political groups. Indeed, everybody that was consulted agreed that he is eminently qualified to seek the office of Deputy Senate President.

“Instructively, majority Senators-elect have assured the senator of their support and the prospect of victory is high.

“However, in deference to President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Robert Ajayi Boroffice has decided to withdraw from the race.

“For the support and solidarity, Senator Robert Ajayi Boroffice is grateful to Senators-elect. He is humbled by the warm embrace and great display of camaraderie.

“We appreciate the people of Ondo North senatorial district and our friends across the country for the prayers, support and goodwill messages.

“For the far-reaching endorsements, steadfastness and unflinching support, gratitude goes to all concerned political groups across the country especially, the APC Young Stakeholders group, the Women for Buhari and Osinbajo group, and the Ondo APC Youth League,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the stepping down of Borofice has reduced the number of aspirants jostling for the Deputy Senate President’s position.

Orji Uzor Kalu, Senator Kabiru Gaya, Senator Francis Alimikhena and Ovie Omo-Agege have shown interest in becoming the Deputy Senate President of the ninth Senate.

The running mate to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi is currently present at the hearing session of the petition filed before presidential election tribunal against the declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari as the winner of the 2019 presidential election.

It would be recalled that Obi ran a joint ticket with the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 presidential election.

Also present in the court is a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, and a commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

Wole Olanipekun while moving an objection on the preliminary application filed by President Buhari on his qualification said the application have been filed and served to all parties involved in the matter.

But drama ensued after a counsel who identified himself as Poland standing in for the Hope Democratic Party announced his appearance over which attracted a vehement objection to his claim.

However, President of the Tribunal, Mohammed Lawal Garba further urged all parties involved to privately sort out the issues of representation.

Garba also announced that all preliminary applications pending before the court would be heard on June 13.

Meanwhile, the tribunal has just gone into the preliminary part of the substantive matter.

A group of lawyers has challenged Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, immediate past Majority Leader, House of Representatives, to go to court over criminal allegation levelled against him by some group ahead of the National Assembly speakership election.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Director-General of the Femi Gbajabiamila/Ahmed Wase Campaign Organisation, Rep. Abdulmumin Jibrin, had on Wednesday threatened to sue leaders of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

According to Jibrin, the decision to sue CUPP leadership followed its criminal allegations against Gbajabiamila which were untrue.

Jibrin had insisted that Gbajabiamila had never been convicted nor served any court document hence he would participate in the Speakership election on June 11 in spite the campaign of calumny.

But the lawyers, under the auspices of Coalition of Public Interest Lawyers and Advocates (COPA), in a statement Friday, stressed that Gbajabiamila would have to first of all clear himself of the allegation before seeking to contest for the Speaker position.

The statement quoted Mr Pelumi Olajengbesi, leader of the group, as welcoming the lawmaker’s threat of going to court, noting that Nigerians would have the opportunity of knowing whether the allegation against him was true or false.

“We make bold to state that it is crystal clear that Femi Gbajabiamila lacks the moral mettle and sincerity to lead the House of Representatives as its Speaker.

“This is because the context of the press conference held on his behalf failed to address the substantive issue against him, and rather than express remorse, countered with baseless threats against the Nigerian people.

“COPA states categorically that it is in possession of all documents and evidences that establishes a clear case of fraudulent dishonesty and abuse of trust against Femi Gbajabiamila.

“The facts against Gbajiamila are, in fact, readily available to the public as they were established in a Court of Record with same being accessible to the public, and are attached herein for the avoidance of doubt.

“We have established correspondence with the Supreme Court of Georgia and we have documents of Disciplinary Case No. S06Y0829 and the family of the victim of Gbajiamila’s fraud, Hadyatou Barry and also Vesta with P. O. Box 23410 Nashville TN, 31202, the insurance company that paid the claim misappropriated by Femi Gbajabiamila.

“The entire defense raised in Femi Gbajabiamila’s behalf in the said press statement relied on a book whose thorough, unbiased reading ironically actually proves his guilt as the book acknowledges all the material facts establishing his guilt in fraudulently appropriating to himself money meant for the victim of a car accident,” the statement quoted Olajengbesi as saying.

The statement also quoted Olajengbesi as saying that no amount of half-truths and misdirection would stop them from getting to the root of the matter.

Orji Kalu dares APC over 9th Assembly leadership

 

Former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu, has insisted that he would run for the position of Deputy Senate President even if the All Progressives Congress (APC) opposes his ambition.

He said this when he appeared on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday.

“Let me be honest with you even if the party asks me not to run, I will run on the floor of the House, this is one position I have to run for because you cannot leave the Southeast alone, you can’t leave them behind,” Kalu said.

He further stressed that giving the Southeast a worthy position is in line with ensuring that the nation is ruled with equity.

“We are in the process of doing the right thing and the East will be given a place in the scheme of things. I am asking that the East should be given the Deputy Senate President.

“There is a high level of discussions about that and I’m sure that by partisan it would be a law in the House,” he added.
