The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Sunday reacted angrily to recent comments by MKO Abiola’s son, Kola, and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Bode George, that ex-governor Bola Tinubu begged the late Gen. Sani Abacha for the post of a commissioner in Lagos State.

Joe Igbokwe, APC Publicity Secretary in Lagos, in a statement quoted Kola saying “It was after Tinubu had lost out that he decided to join hands with the National Democratic Coalition for the actualization of June 12 mandate.”

Igbokwe, in his reaction, said although APC did not find the need to “dignify a collapsed and a failed politician in Lagos or a little kid without sense of history with a response at a time like this, but we changed our mind because we do not want to allow lies to be told a thousand times so that some people will not believe it as the truth.”

He noted that before the annulment of June 12 1993 Presidential Elections Governors, Senators, House of Reps Members, State Assembly members had been in place and Tinubu was one of the elected Senators from Lagos.

The spokesman quipped: “Now how can an elected Senator be asking for a mere appointment as Commissioner? Does it make sense to anybody who is privileged to be a sensible person?”

“In one breath the story tellers said Asiwaju asked for the post of a commissioner and in another they told us he wanted to be Deputy Sole Administrator Of Lagos. Now, do we have anything like Deputy Sole Administrator then? Was it in existence? Are they not liars from the pit of hell?”

“We do understand the reason why Chief Bode George always have this penchant to get at Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the drop of a hat and even when it is not necessary. The gap between Asiwaju BAT and Chief Bode George in terms of political sagacity, leadership, achievements, follower ship, capacity, acceptance, credibility etc is a huge one in favour of Asiwaju.

“Asiwaju has been defeating and crushing Chief Bode George in every election in Lagos for 20 years and the world knows that George has been an unhappy man for 20 years. How can anyone in all honesty expect Chief Bode George to celebrate his potential political enemy?”

“Chief Bode George has found himself in a miserable political position in Nigeria in the past 20 years and everybody knows that Asiwaju kept him in that miserable situation and only a baby will think that he will be fair to Asiwaju in anything at all.

“While it is possible for Chief Bode George to work so hard to get to Asiwaju’s level in the next 20 years it is difficult if not impossible to bring Asiwaju to Bode George’s pathetic Level in order to bridge the gap”

“Lagos APC thinks that it is high time Chief Bode George took time to reflect on his poor and unpleasant politics in Lagos and the South West in the past 20 years and try to amends his ways for the better.

“An Igbo adage says when an old woman falls down two times on her way to the market she is bound to count what is remaining in her basket. Time has come for Chief Bode George to take stock and do a sober reflection on his political career.”

Ahead of Tuesday’s inauguration of the National Assembly, front-line contender for the position of Deputy Senate President, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, has withdrawn from the race.

In a statement signed by his Press Secretary, Kayode Fakuyi, stated that “in deference to President Muhammadu Buhari”, Senator Borofice steps down for another contender for the position.

It was gathered that the decision was rectified last night at the caucus meeting of All Progressives Congress, APC, Senators-elect.

A source however disclosed that the third-term senator representing Ondo North Senatorial District stepped down for Senator Ovie Omo-Agege from Delta State.

The press statement issued on Monday read, “Some weeks ago, Distinguished Senator (Prof.) Robert Ajayi Boroffice, OON declared intention, through letters addressed to Senators-elect, to seek the office of Deputy Senate President. The intention to contest was anchored on the deep conviction that with his excellent public service record, rich legislative experience and personality, he has the best credentials for the position.

“Consequently, he embarked on extensive consultations with party leaders, senators-elect and political groups. Indeed, everybody that was consulted agreed that he is eminently qualified to seek the office of Deputy Senate President.

“Instructively, majority Senators-elect have assured the senator of their support and the prospect of victory is high.

“However, in deference to President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Robert Ajayi Boroffice has decided to withdraw from the race.

“For the support and solidarity, Senator Robert Ajayi Boroffice is grateful to Senators-elect. He is humbled by the warm embrace and great display of camaraderie.

“We appreciate the people of Ondo North senatorial district and our friends across the country for the prayers, support and goodwill messages.

“For the far-reaching endorsements, steadfastness and unflinching support, gratitude goes to all concerned political groups across the country especially, the APC Young Stakeholders group, the Women for Buhari and Osinbajo group, and the Ondo APC Youth League,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the stepping down of Borofice has reduced the number of aspirants jostling for the Deputy Senate President’s position.

Orji Uzor Kalu, Senator Kabiru Gaya, Senator Francis Alimikhena and Ovie Omo-Agege have shown interest in becoming the Deputy Senate President of the ninth Senate.

The running mate to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi is currently present at the hearing session of the petition filed before presidential election tribunal against the declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari as the winner of the 2019 presidential election.

It would be recalled that Obi ran a joint ticket with the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar in the 2019 presidential election.

Also present in the court is a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Nuhu Ribadu, and a commissioner at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)

Wole Olanipekun while moving an objection on the preliminary application filed by President Buhari on his qualification said the application have been filed and served to all parties involved in the matter.

But drama ensued after a counsel who identified himself as Poland standing in for the Hope Democratic Party announced his appearance over which attracted a vehement objection to his claim.

However, President of the Tribunal, Mohammed Lawal Garba further urged all parties involved to privately sort out the issues of representation.

Garba also announced that all preliminary applications pending before the court would be heard on June 13.

Meanwhile, the tribunal has just gone into the preliminary part of the substantive matter.

Senator Danjuma Goje has withdrawn from the 9th Senate Presidency election expected to hold on June 11.

According to Vanguard, the lawmaker also endorsed the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, for the position.

This was disclosed by the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, after their meeting behind closed doors with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.

Former National Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olabode George, has disclosed that the party’s governorship candidate in Lagos State in the last election, Jimi Agbaje, appears to have joined the All Progressives Congress, APC.

George also revealed that Agbaje failed in the last election because ‘he thinks he knows it all’, adding that it was Lagos people that worked against him.

He said that Agbaje originally come from the APC and had been part of the ruling party in the state from the beginning.

According to the PDP leader, any member of the party that wants to leave should go, adding that Sen. Adeseye Ogunlewe, who recently joined the APC, was a member of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), “so he simply moved back to where he came from.”

“Let them go. Some of them were good guys but now they are going to a place where they do not practice democracy at all. Those people who defected to the APC, from where did they originally come from? They came from APC,” the former Ondo State Military Administrator told Sun.

“Ogunlewe was a member of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), so he simply moved back to where he came from. They came from the APC.

“One of them came to my house and told me that the only business he does is to be a PSP operator and that a letter was written to him threatening to sack him; so because of his daily bread, he had to go back to APC.

“In the case of Dipo Olurunimu, his case was a different ball game. At a time, he was the only PDP member left in the Lagos State House of Assembly when others defected.

“But they were harassing him and he had to join them. APC is not a political party. Look at that Rita Orji she came around and got the ticket after that she started running around claiming to be the leader of the party in the state.

“The experience we have had in the South West is that there has been an unnecessary incursion of control over the affairs of the party from the national body.

“There has been interference in the management of the party in the South West and we met some days ago and decided that never again are we going to allow anybody outside of our zone to come and interfere in the affairs of the party.

“Let the leaders face national issues; you cannot know my house more than me. They were handpicking candidates and imposing them on us and we have seen the results, but we are determined that this would never happen again.

“Segun Adewale’s case is laughable; we need to pray for him, he is a very sick young man. The national body of the party has written that he is not a member of the party.

“If he says he is the chairman, I don’t know what party he is leading; but it is definitely not this PDP. We fought a good fight in the presidential election, we worked for Atiku and we are sure he won. But for Agbaje, he said he knows it all.

“We didn’t work against him; it is the people of Lagos that worked against him. Where did Agbaje originally come from?

“Was he not part of the ruling party in the state from the beginning? Some people are saying he is now in APC and all his movements indicate that he is now with them.”

The Peoples Democratic Party in Lagos State has charged the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) and the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association and the courts to withdraw all the privileges that Prof Itse Sagay enjoys as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

The party, in a statement yesterday by its state Publicity Secretary, Mr Taofik Gani, also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately replace Sagay as the Chairman of the committee.

According to the Lagos PDP, the security agencies must arrest, interrogate and prosecute Sagay for his comments allegedly capable of provoking civil unrests in the country.

Sagay had faulted Supreme Court’s rulings, which upheld the PDP as the winner of the 2019 general elections in Rivers and Zamfara states, and barred the All Progressives Congress from contesting offices. 

But Gani said, “Prof Sagay exposed his hatred for the PDP when he described the Supreme Court judgment by positing that ‘in the next four years, Zamfara State will be governed by a party and politicians rejected by the electorate.’

“To the PDP, these words and stance are inciting and unbecoming of a senior lawyer and must be taken seriously as professional misconduct within the contemplation of Section 24(1)(a) and (b) of the rules of professional conduct.

“To us as a party in Lagos State and from where most of these false activists speak, Prof Sagay is no more a fit and proper personality to head a presidential advisory committee against corruption. We charge the LPPC, the LPDC, the NBA and the courts to withdraw all privileges Prof Itse Sagay enjoys as a SAN.”

Gani said Sagay had showed enough obvious partisanship and support for the APC, adding that one needed not wonder why all the APC chieftains were “saints” before the Sagay-led PACAC.

He said, “With Sagay as an adviser, the advised is at his own risk. It is very laughable that Sagay attempts to be an appellate court to the Supreme Court.”

Earlier, the PDP had accused the PACAC chairman of instigating anarchy and rebellion against constitutional democratic order and reule of law.

The Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai has said that the recent statement on godfatherism which he purportedly made against a National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, was taken out of contest.

According to the Governor, since he made the statement some persons have met him requesting for Tinubu to be dealt with.

El-Rufai insisted that his statement against godfatherism in Lagos was not directed at Tinubu.

We had reported that the Kaduna governor had spoken at a programme in Lagos where he condemned godfatherism which was widely interpreted as an attack against the former Lagos State Governor.

El-Rufai spoke on Friday when he received 121 members-elect of the House of Representatives who were on consultation tour of Northwest at the Government House chamber in Kaduna.

El-Rufai said, “That was not an attack on Asiwaju, it was a generic statement, but the whole thing took a media frenzy because to some people Asiwaju is a meal ticket.

“Let me tell you, because of that, some people started confessing to me that Asiwaju should be dealt with.

“They said ‘Asiwaju wants to finish you, he has been abusing you, we should finish him by finishing his man, Femi Gbajabiamila’.”

Ahead of the inauguration of the 9th National Assembly, groups under the aegis of Presidential Support Committee (PSC) and South East Equity Alliance, made up of leaders of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Southeast zone have urged the leadership of the party to cede the position of the Speaker to the zone.

Fielding questions from newsmen in Owerri on Thursday, Engr. Prince Chamberlain Adiaso, the Southeast Zonal Coordinator of Presidential Support Committee (PSC) expressed the groups’ unalloyed support for Hon Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, the House of Representatives member-elect, representing Okigwe South to clinch the office of the Speaker, Federal House of Representative in the 9th Assembly.

Adiaso, argued that, “it is an injustice for the South West to produce Vice President of the country and still wants to lay claim to the speakership position”.

The Coordinator further said, “Barr. Emeka Nwajiuba being a detribalized Nigerian, should be considered for the position so that he can become a rallying point for the whole APC in the South East geopolitical region.”

He pointed out that the people of Southeast assisted President Muhammad Buhari to get 25% votes, noting that zoning the speakership to the southeast was in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise of inclusive government.

He said “Nwajiuba is best qualified and most suited for the position because of his legislative experience,” and emphasized that “such zoning has become necessary, considering the fact, that APC has made progress in 2019 elections.”

“Nwajiuba as Speaker would ensure the independence of the legislature and harmonious relation with the executive and judicial arms of government.

“We are calling on all well meaning Nigerian to allow the people of South east produce the next Speaker of the 9th assembly,” he said.

While speaking over the speakership race, Chief Nwoha Amaechi, Spokesperson to South East Equity Alliance and former Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, said Emeka Nwajiuba’s cognate experience in legislation makes him credible to be the speaker of the House of Representatives.

Nwoha seized the platform to call on the APC and Nigerians to support the clamour for a progressive and fair national leadership equation.

The former lawmaker said that a Speaker of Igbo extraction was necessary for not only political fairness but natural justice considering the 25 per cent votes given to Buhari in the last election.

Also speaking, Barr. Kingsley Onunuju said the only way to put an end to issues of IPOB and MASOB agitation was to ensure that position like Speakership was zoned to the Southeast.

He said Nwajiuba’s Speakership would increase the popularity of APC in the South-East.

He restated the imperatives of supporting Nwajiuba, noting that it would increase the popularity of APC in the zone.

The Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, has vowed to resist any attempt to stop his inauguration for second term in office.

In a statement yesterday by his Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Alhaji Yusuf Dingyadi, the governor alleged of plots to cause political chaos in the state.

He said that certain individuals were spreading lies and creating confusion that the court was going to remove him from office and give power to the APC.

Tambuwal added that his posters along Birnin Kebbi Road, Maiduguri Road, Airport Road and some other areas within the metropolis had been removed and replaced with those of the APC governorship candidate.

Tambuwal stressed that only legal means could stop his government.

The statement reads, “Election is over, we have won the election and we have offered a hand of fellowship, we asked them to come so that we develop Sokoto State, they refused and went to court, why can’t they allow the court to pass its verdict?

“You can’t take your case to court and start making political noise and telling people lies when even the court has not started its own assignment.

“We are still in the process of pre-hearing, we didn’t even get to the time witnesses are called to testify on the election manipulation they alleged, yet they have started going round telling people lies, especially in the rural areas, they want to show that government is coming to them.”

The governor advised the opposition to allow the court to do their work.

He continued, “PDP in Sokoto is not looking for any backdoor judgement. You allow the court to do what is needful, we have confidence in court because we won election with divine intervention.”

He called on law enforcement agencies in Sokoto to stop what he described as political rascality in Sokoto State.

“We don’t want any political crisis, we don’t want any tension in Sokoto, Sokoto people are peace-loving, we call on security agents to investigate and find out the sponsors of the political rascality in the state,” he said.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Akwa Ibom State has described as shameful and dishonorable Senator Godswill Akpabio’s claim that he never defected but moved to the All Progressives Congress as a result of him being expelled from PDP at the ward level.

Senator Godswill Akpabio had told with evidence the Federal High Court in Abuja that his expulsion from PDP was what compelled him to move to the APC in August 2018.

In his ruling, the trial Judge, Justice Okon Abang on Friday said that the senator only “moved to join APC out of frustration of being expelled by the PDP through a letter dated August 2, 2018”.

The judge held that having been expelled from PDP, Akpabio was at liberty to join another political party of his choice and any attempt to declare his seat vacant as requested by the plaintiff, Legal Defence and Assistant Project would be to punish him for exercising his right to freedom of association under section 40 of the Constitution.

The plaintiff had anchored its suit on section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution which provides that the seat of a legislator who defects from his or her party without any division in the party before the end of the tenure for which the party sponsors the lawmaker’s election shall be declared vacant.

Justice Abang held that the provision of section 68(1)(g) of the Constitution was not applicable to Akpabio, who “neither defected nor decamped” but only moved from the PDP following his expulsion.

Irked by Senator Akpabio’s submission, the PDP in the state said such claim was totally false and shameful.

In a statement signed by the publicity secretary, Ini Emembong and sent to journalists in Uyo, the PDP argued that it was impossible for Senator Akpabio to have been expelled by the party, without the approval of the State Executive Committee of the party.

Ememobong maintained that there was no record showing the existence of such a punitive move undertaken against the senator by his ward or chapter executive.

He also alleged that Senator Akpabio conspired with Ntiedo Usoro, the then Chapter Chairman of Essien Udim to illegally write a letter of expulsion to him and backdate same, adding that Ntiedo having completed his assignment, later defected and joined Chief Akpabio in the APC.

The statement reads in part, “The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has read a news item flowing from the judgement of a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, presided over by Justice Abang wherein the trial judge held that Senator Akpabio led evidence to show that he was expelled from the People’s Democratic Party and therefore was justified in law in ‘moving’ to the APC.

“We state that nothing can be farther from the truth than the transparent lie of expulsion shamelessly spewed by Chief Akpabio. We make bold to state that at no time was Chief Akpabio suspended or expelled from the party. Chief Akpabio had announced to the world on August 8,2018 that he was defecting from the PDP to the APC in pursuit of National interest and to stem the tide of defections at the National Assembly. In fact, at different campaigns, he mocked the PDP as being empty since his uncommon defection . At no time did he mention the issue of expulsion, which has now become his creation as a lame defence to keep his seat. He conspired with Ntiedo Usoro, the then Chapter Chairman of Essien Udim to illegally write a letter of expulsion to him and back date same. The said Ntiedo having completed his assignment, later defected and joined Chief Akpabio in the APC.

“There is no way that Senator Akpabio could have been expelled by the party, without the concurrence of the State Executive Committee of the party. There is no record showing the existence of such a punitive move undertaken against the senator by his ward or chapter executive council. Expulsion is a process and not an event. We know that the disgraced senator is running from his shadows and questioning karma, as his conscience is putting him to remembrance of how he masterminded the suspension and eventual expulsion of his predecessor, Obong Victor Attah from the Party(though the act was reversed by the National Exco of the party). His successor, Governor Udom Emmanuel and the incumbent party leadership under Obong Paul Ekpo have decidedly made themselves unavailable for karma to use against him.

“We warn Senator Akpabio to desist forthwith from including the PDP in his serial lies. He is history to us, for all we care and soon, will be history to his Senatorial District- people who have sent the disgraced senator on compulsory political retirement.

“A brave man should prepare to face the natural consequences of his actions and not to engage in perennial doublespeak, disgraceful pendulum motion and irreverent redefinition of established terms.”

Fani-Kayode reacts to alleged plot by Atiku to ‘overthrow’ Buhari govt

 

Femi Fani-Kayode, former Minister of Aviation has reacted to the recent claims by the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration and the military that certain persons were planning to overthrow the government.

Minister of Information, Lai Mohamed, had said that Atiku and his party, were doing everything to overheat the polity. 

Mohammed further described their alleged actions as an act of treason.

However, in response to the claims, Atiku Abubakar in a statement by his media aide, Mazi Paul Ibe, described the allegations as all lies.

Fani-Kayode reacting to the claims on his Twitter page said only soldiers can overthrow the government, not politicians.

The former minister wrote: “Atiku and PDP is plotting to overthrow the Government in a military coup”- Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information.

“The Bible says, “the wicked run even when no-one is pursuing them.

“As far as I am aware, politicians don’t plan and execute coups: soldiers do.”

Chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, under the aegis of Sunshine Integrity Movement, SIM, yesterday set up a reconciliation committee with a mandate to bring together aggrieved members of the party.

The chieftains led by the senator representing Ondo Central Senatorial district, Chief Donald Omotayo Alasoadura, said the move was necessary to position the party for victory in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Prominent members of the party in the group include; Special Adviser to the governor on Transport, Mr. Tobi Ogunleye, Commissioner for Planning, Mr. Emmanuel Igbasan and the Chairman, Governing Council of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Banji Alabi,.

Other members of the Sunshine Integrity Movement (SIM) are; Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr. Bamidele Oleyelogun, his Deputy, Mr. Ogundeji Iroju, a member of House of Representatives, Mr. Babatunde Kolawole, Mr Sunday Agbotoba and a member elect of House of Assembly, Mr. Samuel Aderoboye.

In a communiqué read by the Secretary of the movement, Prof. Olu Aboluwoye, after its meeting, the group said, “the crisis rocking the ruling APC may deny the party of its victory in the forthcoming governorship election, hence the need to bring everybody on board and work for the success of the party.”

The Abia North Senatorial candidate of the Accord Party (AP) in the just-concluded February 23 National Assembly election and now, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress(APC), Chief Onyekachi Iheme, has slammed the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the insecurity threatening the unity and corporate existence of Nigeria.

Iheme insisted that the upsurge in insurgency, banditry and kidnapping in most parts of the country were as a result of the sixteen years failed leadership of PDP.

According to DAILY POST, the APC chieftain, who spoke in a telephone interview on Sunday night, also insisted that the former ruling party failed to tackle the insurgencies headlong when it started under its watch.

He opined that the APC-led federal government commitment in fighting and ridding Nigeria of corruption deteriorated the insecurity in the land.

His words, “It is the product of the failed PDP leadership. What you are seeing now is the result of the failure of the PDP leadership to give the country a direction. So, people were doing what they liked, benefitting what they did not work for. You will agree with me that this issue of insurgency, terrorism banditry and kidnapping did not just start from the present President Muhammadu Buhari-led government. You will also agree with me that the insecurity got worsened during the Presidency of Goodluck Jonathan.

“Today, we are witnessing direct assault on insurgency, because, the federal government is committed to fighting insecurity. The government is making every effort to ensure that the insurgency does not last longer. Normally, it had to get this high to come low. This is not a time to play to the gallery. The federal government is not paying lip services to the insecurity ravaging the country. You should also understand that terrorism is now a global phenomenon. Terrorism is not only peculiar to Nigeria. Some parts of the world are experiencing insurgencies.

“When the economy is in recession, when things are not working, when corruption is thriving, you have no other option than to indulge in crimes. A lot of people were benefitting from corruption. So, the anti-corruption fight of this government is what spring up this insecurity. Because of this government had decided to fight corruption, what do you expect? Crime and criminality will have to find away out.”

Special Assistant to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar on Youth and Support Groups, Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas, has warned the All Progressives Congress, APC, that the younger generation will not sit and watch the ruling party impose a failed leader on Nigerians.

 

The former vice president’s aide, in an open letter to the APC on Thursday from Kaduna, warned the ruling party to desist from desperation to cling to power.

 

He said the APC should jettison alleged plans of coercing the judiciary to favour its candidate with judgment as regards the outcome of the presidential election, warning that such interference might not go down well with the youth.

 

Abbas said, “There’s a limit to what Nigerians can take. The younger generation of this country will not sit back and watch you desperately forcing a failed leader on them to destroy their future.

 

“Millions of Nigerians youth have already lost their jobs in the last four years, that is the main reason for this increase in crime across the country. Take heed because Revolution that will consume all of you is coming. Enough is enough!”

 

In the letter titled, ‘AN OPEN LETTER TO THE ALL PROGRESSIVE CONGRESS (APC)’ the special assistant expressed disappointment with the outcome of the elections as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

 

“I wish to use this channel of communication to write you this open letter to Atikulate our utter disappointment and continued rejection of the total mess you called presidential election.

 

“Recall that in 2015, former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (God bless him immensely) promised to give Nigerians a free, fair and credible election that everyone would be proud of.

 

“He openly stated that election is not a do or die affair and he would not allow anyone to die for him just to cling to power at all costs. Here is a man with conscience who kept his words and lived to his promise.

 

“The 2015 general elections was adjudged by both local and international Observers as one of the best thing that has ever happened to Nigeria since June 12,” Abbas said.
