Reno Omokri, former aide to ex-president Goodluck has reacted to President Muhammadu Buhari’s response to Boko Haram suicide bombings in Mandarari community in Borno State. 

Buhari on Monday night expressed sadness over the attack and sent his condolences to victims of the Borno attack.

The president wrote “I commiserate with the families of the victims of yesterday’s Viewing Center bomb blasts in Mandarari, Konduga LGA of Borno State.

“My deepest condolences to all those affected.”

But, Omokri on his Twitter page condemned the President’s reaction, noting that residents of Borno do not need condolences but ‘Action’ against Boko Haram insurgents in the state.

The former presidential spokesman wrote: “Dear General Buhari, Borno people do not need COMMISERATION. They need ACTION.

“Last month, you went to Qatar to lie that Boko Haram were defeated.

“These are people that could have helped us defeat Boko Haram. But you LIED to look good to them.”

Meanwhile, Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) confirming the attack on Monday, said 30 persons lost their lives while 42 others were injured when three suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers detonated Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Mandarari community of Konduga local government area.

UNICEF, on Monday, condemned the use of children as suicide bombers in Nigeria.

The UN body said this in reaction to suspected Boko Haram suicide bombings in Mandarari community in Borno.

“According to several reports, three children – two girls and a boy (ages unknown) – were used to detonate explosives that killed 30 people and injured 40 others at a community football viewing centre in Konduga, Borno today.

‘UNICEF sends its condolences to all those who have been killed or injured in this horrific incident. It is unacceptable that children should be used in this way”, a statement by UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Peter Hawkins, said.

“UNICEF appeals to all those involved in this terrible conflict to protect children at all times and to keep them out of harm’s way.

“This incident brings the number of children who have been reported as having been used as human bombs to five, since January 2019. In 2018, 48 children – including 38 girls – were used in suicide attacks.

“We again call on all parties to the conflict in north-east Nigeria to immediately cease all attacks against civilians, to stop using children in this conflict, and to abide by their obligations under international humanitarian law.”

Amnesty International has condemned the suicide bomb attack at Mandareri-Sambisa ward of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.

Osai Ojigho, Director Amnesty International Nigeria in a statement described the attack as a type of Boko Haram’s disdain on the sanctity of life and campaign targeting civilians.

The statement read: “These horrific suicide bomb attacks that killed at least 30 people and injured over 40 more bear all the hallmarks of Boko Haram and its vicious, unrelenting campaign targeting civilians.

“These unlawful attacks are typical of Boko Haram’s despicable disdain for the sanctity of human life. We are calling on Boko Haram and other armed groups to immediately stop targeting civilians.

“All those responsible must face justice for all the atrocities it has committed, including the use of children for suicide missions.

“The Nigerian authorities must do more to protect civilians, especially in areas like Konduga that have frequently been targeted by Boko Haram.”

Boko Haram: Borno SEMA gives update on suicide attack, confirms dozens dead

 

The Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) on Monday said 30 persons lost their lives while 42 others were injured when three suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers detonated Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Mandarari community of Konduga local government area.

Usman Kachala, SEMA’s Director of Search, Rescue and Operations, who disclosed this to newsmen when he visited the scene of the attack on Monday, said the incident occurred around 8pm on Sunday.

Kachala said that the three suicide bombers, comprising two females and a male, detonated the IEDs in a local tea joint and film centre in the community.

He said that about 17 persons died instantly, adding that the death toll increased to 30 on Monday as a result of lack of immediate medical attention.

The SEMA Director said that his staff could not reach the spot of the incident as the military had closed the road to traffic and the hospital in Konduga did not have enough facilities to handle the situation.

“When I and my team arrived Konduga early this morning, the military prevented us from gaining access to the community to assist the victims.

“They told us they were given order from above not to open the road until 9am,” he lamented.

NAN reporter, who later visited the scene of the attacks along with SEMA team, reports that dozens of the wounded victims were seen being conveyed in pick-up vans by relations to hospitals in Maiduguri, the state capital, a distance of about 80 km from their town.

Zamfara: Buhari reacts to latest killings, issues fresh order

 

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed state governments across the Northwest to pursue an urgent revamp of the national security apparatus in the subregion.

A statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by Garba Shehu, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, said the partnership followed the infiltration of bandits into areas that were hitherto secure.

”This is coming on the heels of the recent killing of 34 persons in an attack on Tungar Kafau and Gidan Wawa communities in Shinkafi Local Government Areas of Zamfara,” the presidential aide said.

Shehu quoted President Buhari as expressing sorrow over the renewed attacks and extended his sympathies to the governments and people of Sokoto and Zamfara states.

The president charged all stakeholders, including the federal security agencies and the states involved in drawing up the long-term strategic defence plan to begin its immediate implementation.

”Under the plan, states are joining the federal government in supporting the security and military operations by providing logistical support.

”States are providing additional vehicles in addition to those provided from the center.

”The federal government is establishing new forward operation bases and when all of these come together, the ongoing operations will be scaled up,” the presidential aide added.

According to him, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the various State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMA) are expected to streamline their operations to provide succor to displaced persons.

He noted that thousands of the displaced persons were taking refuge in the neighboring Niger Republic.

Shehu expressed the hope that the full implementation of the plan would provide security for residents to return to their deserted communities.

He reiterated the determination of the Buhari administration to safeguard lives and property of all citizens, assuring that the government ”will not fail in that regard”.

Boko Haram: 14 reported killed, 38 injured as 2 suicide bombers attack Mandareri-Sambisa

 

At least, 14 people have been reported dead and 38 others seriously injured following a suicide bomb attack at Mandareri-Sambisa ward of Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to some residents of the area, who spoke to newsmen on Sunday night, said the suicide bombers were two in number, who attacked the community few minutes after eight O’clock.

According to the residents, the area attacked by the two suicide bombers is a crowded area where young men usually gather to while away time during the evening.

A political women leader in the area, who identified herself as Hajiya Fatima, said she was at the hospital in Konduga at the time of calling, adding that “people are just dying.”

From the background there was so much noise and confusion as people seemed to be calling for helping hands to carry those injured.

Hajiya Fatima said, “the situation is very bad as there are not many hands in the hospital to help the injured.

” We are hoping that the wounded would hold still before morning when help is hopefully going to come. Already Police and some soldiers have arrived the area,” she said.

For now there was no official details from either police or the military, but residents have said situation is bad as at the time of this report.

Borno Attack: ISIL claims killing of 11 Nigerian soldiers in Borno

 

ISIL has claimed killing of 11 Nigerian soldiers in an attack on the northeastern town of Gajiganna, Borno.

Al-Jazeera reports that the group made the claim at the weekend through its news agency, AMAQ.

ISIL published pictures of burned barracks and dead bodies it claimed belonged to the soldiers.

The fighters fled after the military called in air force support and reinforcements from a battalion in a neighbouring town.

There have been renewed attacks on troops since the start of 2019.

In a similar attack late April, several soldiers were reportedly killed at Sabon Gari, Mararaba Kimba, a village between Biu and Damboa Local Government Areas in Borno.

ISWAP claimed responsibility for the attack.

Residents of Sabon Gari, who spoke to news men said unspecified numbers of Boko Haram fighters riding in several vehicles and motorcycles attacked a military base located along the Biu–Damboa road.

“The military base is isolated and this made it a vulnerable target for the attack. The militants arrived at the location in their numbers outnumbering the military.

“They set the base on fire, destroyed and looted equipment before reinforcement arrived and they were repelled after several hours of battle”, Mallam Usman Kimba said.

In continuation of their operations to clear Boko Haram terrorists, troops of 22 Brigade, Operation LAFIYA DOLE, in collaboration with local vigilantes, have rescued 54 persons suspected to be kidnapped victims.

A statement from Colonel Sagir Musa, Acting Director Army Public Relations said, troops have continued moving into the hinterland on clearance operation to destroy Boko Haram terrorists.

According to the statement, troops effectively cleared Ma’allasuwa and Yaga – Munye villages in Borno State.

“No encounter with Boko Haram terrorists was made as they run away before troops’ arrival leaving behind 54 suspected kidnapped victims.

“Out of the number, 29 are grown up women and 25 are children of various ages and sex. They have all been rescued.

“Similarly, at Zari – Kasake and Jumachere villages in Damasak general area of Mobbar Local Government Area of Borno State, troops of 145 Battalion Operation LAFIYA DOLE on clearance operation discovered and destroyed two Boko Haram terrorists’ logistics vehicles. Deserted BHTs make up shift accommodation was also destroyed.

“Additionally, Mopol Sergeant Markus John – Personal Number – PNo 383106 was arrested at Njimtilo check point along Maiduguri – Damaturu road in possession of 2 magazines, 146 rounds of 7.62 mm Special ammunition and one round of Anti Aircraft Gun concealed in his bag while on transit to Lagos State.

“Recall that on the 10th of May 2019, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE in conjunction with the Nigerian Police, arrested 14NA7113208 Private Paul Ojochegbe and 12NA672586 Lance Corporal Oko Eke in possession of one disassembled AK 47 Rifle at the same N’jimtilo check point.

“Nigerian Army will remain resolute in ending terrorism and other forms of insecurities across the country,” the statement said.

The army also reiterated its appeal to the public to continue to provide useful information about suspicious movement of terrorists/criminals wherever they are seen hibernating in Nigeria.

Boko Haram: Gov. Shettima Pays Visit To Over 85 Victims Of The Fresh Attack By Boko Haram Terrorists

The Borno State Governor, Governor Kashim Shettima on Monday described the Boko Haram insurgents’ Sunday night attack on communities in Jere Local Government Area of the state as“sad and inhumane”.

Shetiima told newsmen when he visited the over 80 victims of the attack on treatment at the Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri that the attack indicated high level of atrocities committed by the insurgents.

“It is very sad which no any sensible human being could inflict on another person; such level of dexterity, such level of atrocity but this is a war between light and darkness, and in the fullness of time truth shall always triumph over falsehood.

“We have repeatedly said they have been sufficiently decimated and these decimated monsters berks in the oxygen of publicity they are targeting soft targets, senselessly and criminally opening fire on innocent souls.

“Yesterday, we witnessed that very sad episode, we will continue to intensify our efforts to safeguard life and property, and we are talking with security agencies that are doing their utmost best to secure the state.

“Appreciable progress has been made but such hiccups are inevitable. I will visit the communities to see what measures need to be put in place to forestall future occurrence,” he said.

Shettima assured that the state government would provide free treatment to the victims and provide necessary support during their period of recuperation.

The governor also condoled with the families of those who lost their lives in the attack.

Meanwhile, the Police in Borno had confirmed 20 persons killed and 84 others wounded in the attack.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr Damian Chukwu, disclosed that five mutilated corpses of male suicide bombers were recovered and two Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) vests were diffused by men of the command at the scene of the attack.

He said: “On 01/04/2018 at about 20:20 pm; Boko Haram terrorists in an attempt to infiltrate into Maiduguri through Bale Kura, Bale Shuwari, Jamine and Alkaramti villages in Jere local government area of the state, in the outskirts of Maiduguri detonated IEDs.

“They were promptly repelled by military and police reinforcement. In the process about 84 persons were injured and 20 others killed.”

Chukwu added that normalcy had been restored to the area and called on people to go about their lawful businesses.

Dapchi Schoolgirls: Yobe Students Fumes At The School Attacks By Boko Haram

 

The National Union of Yobe State Students (NUYOSS) has called on the federal government to stop the attacks on educational institutions in the state.

The President of the Union, Comrade Hassan Musa El-badawi, told a press conference yesterday in Damaturu, that attacks on Yobe schools since the beginning of insurgency had claimed the lives of over 100 students in five schools.

He said, “We remember in sorrow our brothers and sisters who lost their lives tragically as a result of continuous attacks by the Boko Haram militants in FGC Buni-Yadi, College of Agric Gujba, GGSS Mamudo, GGSS Damaturu and GGSTC Dapchi. The recent Dapchi attack saga has further reawakened us that if adequate measures are not taken, more schools can be attacked.

He said NUYOSS was making it clear that Dapchi attack should be the last and effort must be intensified for the return of “our sister Leah Sharibu who is still in the hand of Boko Haram.”

He commended President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Ibrahim Gaidam for their efforts in securing the release of the abducted schoolgirls but urged them to deploy more security personnel to protect all the schools across the state.

Dapchi Schoolgirls: Agoro Drags Buhari To ICC, Issues 72-hrs Ultimatum For The Release Of The Christian Girl, Leah Sharibu

The national chairman, National Action Council (NAC), Dr. Olapade Agoro on Saturday gave President Muhammadu Buhari a 72-hour ultimatum to ensure the release of Leah Sharibu from the Boko Haram’s captivity.

Agoro while speaking in a telephone interview with journalists in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, however threatened to drag President Buhari before the International Criminal Court (ICC) if the President fails to ensure the release of the only Christian student among the 110 Dapchi female students kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists.

The NAC Presidential aspirant lamented that, “it was unfortunate that Leah is being subjected to further physical and psychological trauma because she insisted on holding on to her religious faith, which is Christianity.”

Agoro also expressed his readiness to surrender himself to the Buhari led Federal Government to be swapped with the innocent Dapchi girl, saying that, “it has now become a crime to be a Christian in Nigeria.”

He said, “I am ready to walk freely to the President Buhari’ negotiators to take me to the Boko Haram for them to take me to replace the innocent girl. I am ready to sacrifice my life to get Leah released unconditionally.”

“President Buhari should engage his negotiating machinery to get Leah released unconditionally from Boko Haram latest by Wednesday. The innocent girl must not be raped or subjected to any other form of inhuman treatment because of her faith.

“I am giving the Federal Government the ultimatum to get her released latest by Wednesday. If she is not released, by Friday, I will be dragging President Buhari before the ICC”.

Agoro noted that, “since it is obvious that the Federal Government negotiated to get the other Dapchi students released, Buhari should come out and tell Nigerians, the terms and conditions of the negotiation.”

Agoro insisted that Nigerians deserve to know, if it was part of the negotiation that only those who are Muslims or ready to embrace Islam would be released by the Boko Haram, adding that Buhari’s failure to give convincing explanation will rekindle the suspicion of attempts to Islamize Nigeria.

He said, “The innocent girl is being made to suffer because of her faith. That should be a concern to all Muslims, Christians and parents in Nigeria. Nobody should be made to suffer, human life should be protected in Nigeria irrespective of religion.”

Dapchi Schoolgirls: US Speaks On The Release Of The Girls By Boko Haram

‎ The United States Government has reacted to the releaseof the Dapchi schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram.

The world power noted that there still remained enormous challenges in Nigeria which would require the attention of the United Nations and other international players.

This is part of remarks by the American Deputy Secretary of State, John Sullivan, during the International Advisory Council’s closing luncheon held at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington.

His words: “It’s a whole-of-government effort. It sounds trite to say, but it’s certainly true. We work closely with our colleagues at the Department of Defence, USAID, and the State Department. I was in Abuja, Nigeria a few months ago, and the challenges are enormous.

“The threat from Boko Haram and ISIS West Africa, particularly in north-western Nigeria, is very serious, as we’ve seen just in the last few weeks with the kidnapping of another 110 schoolgirls, most of who have been released, but only on the condition that they are not  allowed to go back to school, which is astounding on its face. But we’re thankful that at least most of those young girls have been released. But we’ve got to address the security situation.

“But there are deeper problems – economic and social – that require not just U.S. Government’s assistance but assistance from a wide array of private organisations, other countries, and the United Nations. So that’s what we’re looking to mobilise to address the causes of the refugee flows out of that area and prevent these crises from developing,” the American diplomat stated.

Sullivan added that the problems of illegal migration and terrorism facing Nigeria and few other African countries would require more efforts and global cooperation to solve.

He disclosed that the US would work more closely with the G5 countries and national governments to tackle the issues.

“Looking at what we do in the U.S. Government, I’d focus, for example, on Africa, particularly in countries like Nigeria, the countries in the Sahel and Northern Africa, the tragic scenes that we have seen of refugees and migrants leaving Libya, Tunisia, Algeria for southern Europe.

“And those people are coming from countries farther south in Africa, where there is conflict, poverty, et cetera. So we’ve got to have – from the U.S. Government’s perspective, it requires an integrated strategy with our colleagues at the Department of Defence to partner host governments.

“For example, the countries in the Sahel, the so-called G5 – working with them to address the terrorism problems that are presented in the region, to establish a baseline of security so that humanitarian assistance, development assistance can flow into the region, and remove the causes of people who are fleeing those countries, risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean to get to hope for a better future in Europe.”

‎The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, on Saturday confirmed that the Boko Haram terrorists was set to release Leah Sharibu, the only Christian Schoolgirl still in captivity.

IGP Idris made the revelation while speaking to reporters in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

“I was suppose to be in Dapchi today but I couldn’t go because l learnt that Leah Sharibu may be released today by the Boko Haram terrorists.

“I would have gone to Dapchi today but by the time I fly in with a helicopter and police escort, they(terrorists) may think I’m trying to break the arrangement”.

Meanwhile residents of Dapchi are excited over the news that the insurgents have agreed to free Leah Sharibu.

“We are very happy about this development but for now we are waiting patiently to receive Leah Sharibu” a resident told Aledeh.com

“Some residents have ran out of Dapchi for fear of the unknown by the time the insurgents bring Leah Sharibu back,” Kachalla Bukar, Secretary of Association of Parents of Dapchi missing school girls also stated.

Boko Haram Returns The Abducted Dapchi Schoolgirls, 5 Missing

Boko Haram on Wednesday returned the abducted Dapchi schoolgirls kidnapped from the Government Girls School in Yobe.

NAIJA VOICE  is informed that the insurgents group returned the girls in nine vehicles, an episode similar to how they were taken away.

Our Correspondent gathered that there was confusion in the area as members of the community scampered upon sighting the vehicles.

From the sketchy details, we gathered that five of the girls may have died while in custody of the insurgents.

The Minister of Defence, last Saturday had assured Nigerians that all the Dapchi schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram terrorists would regain their freedom.

Dapchi Abducted School Girls: State Government Closes Boarding Schools

The Borno State Government has approved the closure of all boarding secondary schools located outside Maiduguri, the state capital.

This came following the recent attack on Dapchi village of Yobe state by Boko Haram gunmen, who abducted about 100 schoolgirls.

The state government said it took the decision after an expanded Security Council meeting of all security agencies, government and traditional leaders on 15th March, 2018.

According to the statement issued by the State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Muhammed Bulama, the council also okayed the opening of the Maiduguri-Bama road on March 24, for all civilian traffic.

The full text of the resolutions made at the meeting reads:

“Sequel to the unfortunate recent attack on Rann town in Kala-Balge LGA by Boko Haram, urgent and immediate measures will be taken jointly by the Borno State Government and the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies to forestall future occurrences there and in other vulnerable communities in the State.

“Elaborate security, infrastructural, personnel and logistics arrangements will be put in place preparatory to the imminent return of IDPs to Bama, Gwoza and Dikwa LGAs and the subsequent return of their Royal Highnesses to their respective domains.

“To speedily establish structures of civil authority, viz, Local Government Council authorities, para-military agencies, the judiciary and traditional authorities, as pre-requisite to relocating IDPs to their LGAs of origin.

“Maiduguri – Bama – Banki Road will be re-opened on Saturday, 24h March, 2018 to civilian traffic.

“In order to improve on, and enhance existing intelligence gathering techniques, the Nigeria Armed Forces was implored to encourage senior military officers in command positions to closely liase and synergise with traditional rulers in their areas of operation and also endevour to regularly attend the meetings of the security Committees at the LGA level.

“All boarding secondary schools in the State with the exception of those in the Maiduguri and Biu Metropolis will, until further notice, be closed down with immediate effect.

“Any person(s) or group found to be collaborating with Boko Haram, no matter how highly placed or highly connected, will be speedily brought to book in accordance with the laws of the land.

“On the growing menace of drug abuse;

“All stakeholders in the State will be fully mobilized and sensitized to squarely address the problem

“The State Drug Abuse Committee will be reactivated and reconstituted without delay

“All dealers in illicit drugs and substances as well as drug abuse offenders, no matter their position in society, will be speedily brought to book in accordance with the laws of the land.

“Intensive and sustained media campaign against the dangers of illicit peddling and illegal consumption will be mounted

“All premises in the State where the illegal consumption of alcohol, illicit drugs and substances, and other vices detrimental to the moral well-being and security of society take place, especially in the Galadima Area of the Maiduguri Metropolis, will be closed down immediately.

“Relevant agencies of Government, both State and Federal, will be mobilized and empowered to address the menace constituted to the general public by some operators of commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP.

“To sensitize the general public on the importance of obtaining the National Identity Card Number, which is now a pre-requisite for obtaining Voter’s Card and International Passport

“The Borno State Government will facilitate the establishment of a biometric data capturing centre for the issuance of Saudi visas in order to ease the anticipated suffering of intending pilgrims to the Holy Land.”

Dapchi Missing School Girls: We Don't Have Faith In Buhari - Parents

Some parents of the 110 Dapchi missing schoolgirls have expressed their lack of faith in President Muhammadu Buhari’s promise during his visit that the girls would be rescued.

President Muhammadu Buhari last week Wednesday visited families of the 110 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram insurgents at Government Girls Science and Technical School, Dapchi, on February 19.

But the parents have now said that they were not convinced by the president’s words and promise to use military operation to rescue their daughters.

Kachalla Bukar, secretary of the forum of parents of abducted Dapchi girls, said only the rescue of the girls could convince them of government’s efforts.

He told Sun, “We are not convinced about efforts to rescue our girls because we haven’t seen anything. We haven’t seen much of the military work.

“The Buhari that we know is a gentleman. I don’t think he will stand before us and promise to rescue our girls without fulfilling it. Of course, we are not convinced about the efforts to bring them back since we’ve not seen anything.”

Similarly, Zara Adamu, one of the parents, said only the safe return of her daughter could convince her.

“Baba Buhari has spoken. I don’t know what they are doing to bring our daughters back, but he said they are doing something. I will be convinced when I see my daughter back alive,” she said.

Mother of one of the girls, Harira Damagun also said, “Only Allah cannot fail, not human being,we have taken the incident as an act of God.

“We see it as an act of God. Oh Allah, help us from this predicament and save our children!

“All we plead is for the government to help us secure the release of our daughters,” she said.
